Cook Vs the WI quartet of the 80s

Border>Greg Chappell is something I wholeheartedly endorse.
As great as Border was, this is just silly.

It's either

Chappell > Border

Or possibly

Border = Chappell

But I can't see a valid argument as to why Border > Chappell

Like you, pointing to the "Cook will cruise past Sachin's records" is one of my favourite things to do when he's out of form (which has been ages now). But the thing is, if Cook just keeps averaging even 40-45 for another 6-7 years, which is realistic, he will get close to the record. Even with such a poor slump, he averages almost 80 runs per test. Say he plays another 80-90 tests and scores 6000 runs averaging in the 40s, he's pretty much in touching distance. Not saying it'll happen, but he doesn't really need to set the world on fire.
"Say he plays another 90 tests"

Yeah but cricket is not that simple.

I'll bet my third testicle he doesn't come near Sachin's runs or centuries records.

because weldone was implying that when people say Cook has a chance to break the record, that means they say Cook is better than every batsman behind him in the aggregate table.

I find it odd that you can see a player being equal to another player being reasonable, but that same player being a tiny bit better than the other player "silly". That's a weird line to draw.

Yeah I get what you're saying but it can apply to too many players.

Cook will get injured. Cook will be ****ter than he is at some point. Cook will be sacked as captain. All of this **** isn't taken into account.

Just not worth hypothetising. Stop playing devil's advocate and just say the bloke won't come near Sachin.

Cook getting sacked as captain may help him. Can just go back to scoring runs again.

I just hope he doesn't break the test runscoring record as the amount of tears from Indian fans will drown everyone in the world.

I personally think there's a few reasons Chappell was better, but I can understand Border being seen as his equal by others. I can't understand Border being considered better than Chappell for any particular reason though (except being a better guy). But sure, it's a fine line.

I not off it, I think he will go close to the runscoring record in tests. He is in a bad run and needs to get out of it quick as we have a big summer ahead. Not convinced he is a good captain but we have no other bugger to do it anyway unless we give it Root.
