Normally I and many other CWers don't read Stuff comments, youtube comments, or even cricinfo comments... all three of those are filled with trolls.
yeah comments slagging off the picking of Satner and why wasn't Anton Devcich picked instead . Its like did you even stop to think WHY ??

Happy for Santner, nice reward for a solid breakout season. And to think he was close to giving the game away less than two years ago because he couldn't crack the ND side with Bradburn running it. Excited to see Wheeler join the early part of the tour too, I could watch him bowl all day.

I can't believe I ate the whole thing
Gutted Brownlie didn't make it but I guess he needs more time opening. I can see McHesson going for the classic LH/RH variety combo. Although they also said 'he can cover several batting positions' and given he's batted middle order in the past, could we see Guptill in for Neesham?

From that squad I'd personally go:

1. Guptill
2. Latham
3. Williamson
4. Taylor
5. McCullum
6. Anderson
7. Watling+
8. Craig
9. Henry
10. Southee
11. Boult

Really depends on the pitch whether or not to go full pace or play spin. Wags and Bracewell didn't exactly blow down doors domestically and Dougeh is ahead in that regard, but Henry is irresistible.

I also hereby want to start a trend that we pronounce Henry's last name in the same way of former footballer Thierry Henry.

Yeah the comments on Stuff are bagging Satner selection and promoting Devcich lol instead. Considering Satner has been taking strictly for development purposes which the idiots on Stuff just don't understand . Satner wont be playing in ODIs barring an injury crises but will instead take part in the 4 day warm ups and LEARN.

Nah I do. You lot know how thrilled I was to have a player who had already played international cricket for another country on the books, and I bang on about his limitations a lot, but Ronchi is the next best keeper bat and has played well against good bowling attacks including the second coming of Southee with Boult at the other end. Kruger van Wyk is solid with the bat but the theory seems to be he throws the slip cordon out and Derek de Boorder has a nice batting technique and is a good gloveman but hasn't broken the door down.

If Watling gets injured then Ronchi is our guy, duke or no duke.

Nah I bet there are legitimately no innings where Ronchi's making runs against the swinging ball in the vault, and Hesson's already been burnt overestimating Ronchi's abilities once with that Champions Trophy in 2013. Just one of those 'good to have around, fits the culture' decisions I guess, like Fulton last winter.

Yep, seeing plenty to hate again here from the thicko. I'll give Ronchi a call when I next want an airy drive on the up at 150/5 in a World Cup final I think.

There is only one Munro's Law and I'm going to have to rename it.

I agree Munro's Law helps him a lot but he can use his bat. A Brad Haddin-esque cricketer - good for dominating attacks in the right situation but you take Watling or old Prior as first choice every time.

Good player, deserving next in line. I don't expect him to share in any fighting world record sixth wicket partnerships like WPWB but I do expect him to smash the old ball to all corners, especially at home.

why do we need a reserve wicket keeper when Latham is in the team?

Better to have an extra bowler, batsman or allrounder. What happens if Anderson gets injured?

Latham wasn't outstanding at wicket keeping to begin with and he hasn't been a live match keeper for how long?

You can piss around with part timers in JAMODIs but not in test matches in England with the duke ball. A part timer will drop the game.

It is a shame that an English county etc hadn't signed Ronchi up for the season - would be a useful acquisition. That we could have just called him into the squad if injury hit.

No, I'd expect Santner will definitely play in the ODIs, but probably only in a game or 2 rotating with NcCullum. The ODI spinner project begins now.

As an ODI spinner, Santner looks the real deal.

The good thing about Santner in ODIs is he provides proper batting, not bowling allrounder batting but allrounder batting, down at #8.

He's going to be h4x if his bowling is up to ODI level.

Howsie gave him the thumbs up for being a better batting talent than the young ND specialist bats as well and while our Howsie has his quirks (as do we all) he's a very good talent spotter. Greg Chappell-esque.

Agreed. Most importantly though, Latham's role needs to be clearly defined. He's a specialist batsman opening the innings. That's all he needs to worry about, so forget the gloves. If Watling gets injured over there, we don't want Rutherford opening and Latham down at seven. Thankfully Hesson's smarter than that, so he picked a competent reserve.

Yeah, I really like that selection. They've made all of the right moves. Henry getting called up to the test squad, Ben Wheeler getting a bit of attention. Considering the ODI squad is basically full-strength, I'd be tempted to play Santner straight away.

He looks promising alright. He will be NZ's main ODI spin bowling all rounder until Josh Finnie is ready for the job.

Do you agree with this against the Duke and Anderson, PEWS?
It depends what you want really. He'll be fine with the gloves but the thing about Ronchi is that he's a terrible starter; he's just never really had a grasp of the idea of building an innings early on by getting his eye in.

If you want your #7 to be able to really change games by scoring occasional hundreds then I think he's still the man to be Watling's backup, but if you just want someone to reliably build partnerships with set batsmen and be a cog in the wheel then I think de Boorder would be a better bet in England.

Ultimately I probably still would've gone with Ronchi just because I don't think changing the backup wicket keeper for each tour based on the conditions is a great way to build squad morale and continuity, but I do think de Boorder is probably the better pick for the conditions. Ronchi's more likely to make a batsman's contribution at seven but de Boorder is more likely to perform the #7 role, if that makes sense. Above all though, it's important that he isn't considered as specialist batting backup like he has been in a few other squads recently.
