Whatever the effect of that rain break, NZ badly needed it if just to catch their breath.

This has been some innings, AB hardly took 2 overs to get settled in. Am already hearing some people compare KW's drop to Gibbs letting of SR Waugh, but this was a very difficult chance. Just feels like it's one of those days for AB, fair play to him. NZ just have to keep believing they can rescue this situation. Rain would help though!

We may have been better off on retrospect had Guptill not taken Roussow's catch.

That is tongue in cheek obviously. The extra wicket will help with DL if nothing else.

The other thing to take into account, if overs are lost, is the impact it has on the bowling quotas.

Lose 5 overs and Boult can't come back.
Also one less for the 5th bowler combination so we will take that trade off.

Man d/l is really going to screw us over hig time... Ab on form with a 5 more overs from the from the part timers and vettori. And two more powerplay overs.

With AB in the team we ought to just play 5 Gavin Larsens and try not to ever take a wicket. Let SA get to 250/0 after 50.

What would be the D/L score if say the game becomes 38 overs a side? How much of a boost to SA's current total get? Anyone know how to calculate that?

Yeah this. It just smacks of "I'm Brendon McCullum and this is how I captain" If he's allowed to receive all this praise than a little bit if critisim is fair go too.
I agree. I just don't think McCullum should receive all the praise when New Zealand wins if he is going to be criticised for doing the exact same thing where things are not going well. I'm not saying McCullum's tactics are great but, as you say, this is just how he captains.

Why didn't Quinton do the exact same thing though...surely they go through game scenarios.
You of course are right, mate. Game situation Quinny should have settled in more but think he is the sort that needs to take that risk to feel good at the crease to get going and the SA management do give him that freedom.

Reserve days function as replays, more than 'split the ODI over 2 days', no?

I may be wrong there, but I do think overs get lost.
I know that used to be the rule, but thought they changed it. Perhaps it is a case of finishing the match on day 1 if possible.

Any reduced overs will favour NZ, no doubt, although at least SA had some momentum. Would have been worse for them if it was 5 overs earlier.
