Just never seen anyone play like this. Tendulkar, Lara, Ponting, all have seemed unstoppable at various times, but De Villiers plays some shots that boggle the mind. That late cut isn't just a dab; he plays it above the stumps and gets amazing wrist action going to hit a genuine, powerful cut. Breathtaking to watch.

so they might get to around 300.

Just not seeing anything to panic about at all.
I could respond to this and give an alternate view on the exact number they will make - but given you are probably commenting on the type of posts where the neutrals are predicting 390ish from here - I will agree with your general sentiment.

If we can get out AB I would say we can get them for 300. If he stays in I would say up to 350 is possible.

What?

There's a difference between saying "don't be aggressive up front" and "don't bother with a first slip and give your bowlers some more protection when they're bowling to AB de Villiers in this kind of mood".

Tactics are allowed to change as the situation changes, y'know.
Yeah this. It just smacks of "I'm Brendon McCullum and this is how I captain" If he's allowed to receive all this praise than a little bit if critisim is fair go too.

heh imagine if SA's innings gets cut off and with a bit of inflation NZ need about 230 off 38 overs

If this rain shortens the game. D/l would favor new zealand here. It's going to far underprice what AB wouldve done had the rest of innings been played out.

So presumably overs won't be reduced with the reserve day available tomorrow even if they come back late.

Cricinfo makes a good point. If overs are lost, Duckworth Lewis doesn't score as quick as AB. So, that'll be a huge advantage for NZ.

Weather looks awful in the direction this has come from. Visibility massively down and clearly raining in the middle distance. Not raining heavily but could be persistent.

If this gets rain reduced it will help the blackcaps - as I think Duckworth Lewis will probably only give them 8 an over from here which we will take happily.

How does McCullum bat btw, does he go for broke or play according to the situation? Normally I wouldn't mind McCullum going for it (still wouldn't mind it today if he did) but sometimes you have to realize the importance if your own wicket as a player, him getting out early would be a massive boost to SA compared to if he were to stay in and be something like 20 off 30 imo.

Obviously how rain affects this game might change his approach though.

It's especially hard to predict the score because if AB gets out then it's probably going to be 40 runs lower than what it would be. That said Miller and Duminy aren't useless either so >300 looks very likely either way.

Reserve days function as replays, more than 'split the ODI over 2 days', no?

I may be wrong there, but I do think overs get lost.

@acxjones The good news for NZ is that Duckworth-Lewis doesn't have a "de Villiers" setting.

The other thing to take into account, if overs are lost, is the impact it has on the bowling quotas.

Lose 5 overs and Boult can't come back.

Blakey

State Vice-Captain
So the Saffers saw off Boult (as predicted) and have managed to saunter along quite nicely.

NZ will be chasing 340 minimum, which will be far too many considering the SA bowling lineup.
