Knock the Davis Cup format all you want the opening day is gloriously nutty

I'm all for James Ward getting an hour of relevance (and nice comeback from Australia's Kokkinakis)

Wait there's no fifth set tie-break....I hope there's enough beer to keep the Glaswegians moderately sedate while they wait for the finish

Haven't watched Davis Cup since GB lost to Ecuador (Nicolas Lapentti springs to mind). Curiously engrossing, but someone's bound to crack soon.

Anil you used to hate on Roddick. Would love to have him back now surely?
not really...what would be the point? he would not even be a top 10 player...also he represents the beginning of the decline of us men's tennis...what we really need is fresh talent which right now seems to be in short supply...

Roddick in his peak is top 10 today imo, but even if he isn't, don't see how you wouldn't want a guy who made 3 Wimbledon finals playing for your country. He's no Agassi or Pete, but he's better than Isner.

Weird that you'd describe a guy who won a US Open as the decline of US men's tennis. He was the last bastion!

Harrison is the young American talent who just hasn't come on so far.

sure he is much better than isner but that doesn't take much...in fact he is closer to an isner than an agassi or sampras (any comparison with those two or even someone like courier would be absurd)...when he came on, he was ridiculously touted as the next big thing in tennis on the basis of his one weapon, a big serve and for a while, he was able to take advantage of the lack of real talent in tennis...federer was on his way up but was still susceptible against the nalbandians of this world and his biggest rivals were an already declining hewitt , an aging sampras & agassi and juan carlos ferrero (i may have forgotten other middling players of that period but they don't really matter)...he reached no:1 briefly in a vacuum and then once federer started dominating, promptly became his whipping boy...he lost any relevance (as a top player) once nadal, djokovic and murray came into the picture one after the other...the fact that he will most likely go into the hall of fame just reveals how flawed the selection process is...he was a pretty good player for most of his career but american men's tennis had such high standards until then that his "ascent" marked the beginning of the decline we have seen ever since...his us open win was one of the luckiest we have seen in a while, if ferrero's semifinal didn't leave him with no time and energy for the final, he would have beaten roddick, he was the better player in that tournament...he just got the short end of the scheduling stick that year...

top 10 today at his best is very debatable but even if he sneaks into that list, it would only show how far american men's tennis standards have fallen...harrison, young, querrey et al aren't worth discussing in that context, nor is isner...

that's not what we were discussing jono...i never said he wasn't a good player and at times a very good player, considering his limited talents, he was certainly an overachiever and put together an excellent career...all i am saying is that he was never a great player, after decades of being spoiled by mcenroe, connors, agassi, sampras and even courier, it becomes difficult to be excited about a roddick and my negative opinion is really more of a reaction to how incredibly overrated he was for most of his career...

Well that was kind of exactly our discussion though. I asked you if you would take Roddick now and you said no.

I understand the idea that the US media would have overrated him. He still went toe to toe with Fed at Wimbledon 09 in amazing fashion. Will always respect him for that. He had a great career.

yes and haven't i explained why there wouldn't be any real point in "taking roddick" now just to have a top 20 or maybe a borderline top 10 player...?

i have said it before, federer was clearly nowhere close to his best in the '09 final (nadal would have whupped him in straights the way he played) and roddick played out of his skin...roddick probably played the best match of his life and almost won wimbledon and that is commendable but he still lost to an off-color federer and to me it just shows the vast difference in their respective levels...

Well the Czechs won back to back Davis Cups with a top 10er and a top 30 player. You don't need ATGs to win the Davis Cup.

Roddick, Isner and the Bryans. You're probably not losing to Great Britain.

Anyway agree to disagree on A-Rod. I respect the hell out of the guy.

You are this weekend. Murray wins his 2 + Isner loses to Ward.

Argentina-Brazil going on till Monday I see. Good for the locals.

Nah Isner beats Ward knowing he's not the top guy and being inspired by A-Rod on the bench cheering him on
