In a way this match was fitting revenge for the 2003 CWC game in which Bond took six and we lost.

I wonder how many times a player has taken six wickets and his side loses. It must be very few.

Can't wait for the guys who went to the game to start filtering in and describing the atmosphere. It's been a very long time since we've seen something like that at an NZ game. Even the Baz 300 at the Basin wasn't quite the same. Everything a kiwi did well, even if it was pick the ball up, got a huge cheer and the Aussies copped it. Pretty amped up atmosphere, like what you see in Indian ODIs over there. The crowd wanted demolition.

The fact that the Ump had to go to the TV replay shows how unlucky Anderson was. I thought at the time that the ball was a mediocre one so I didn't blame the batsman for having a go at all.

On-the-other-hand, all that Marsh had to do was to keep the ball out, and so he betrayed a complete lack of defensive technique/composure at a critical time.
Marsh was new to the wicket and these things happen

Anderson looked out of his depth and I suspect that a few fast bowlers would have looked at his innings with interest

Hey, you're a Statsguru guru. I didn't even know that was possible.

9 other times apart from tonight is pretty rare. I just checked it for 7 wickets and it's never happened, which means Starc tonight got the third best bowling figures in history for a player on the losing team.

Yeah my query was 6 wickets or more so it would've picked up any 7s if they'd happened.

Would it be too harsh to say today showed the difference between England and Australia?

England have the bowlers to do what Australia did today. Broad and Anderson on song are fantastic and great viewing, plus Finn provides quality jam. Australia managed to both hunt for wickets but also hold their nerve and think clearly. Clarke made mistakes in the field and Johnson had a bad time of it but the team as a whole were able to push through it.

I have said it before but Starc is potentially one of the greats

6'6" left-arm express swing has rarely, if ever, been seen before

Oz need to be patient with him in tests and give him a run of matches as the upside is massive

Oz have a much better and quicker attack than England

They really don't. I don't think any of them can bowl 150kph in-swinging yorkers. They barely seem to be able to bowl yorkers anymore.

Aus have a lot of stale bread behind the first three pacers tbh and Anderson and Broad are good bowlers quite capable of destroying good batting line ups. Besides, Cummins has his poor moments.

Australia's big advantage are the two Mitchells'.

You don't need to bowl 150kph swinging yorkers to smash teams. New Zealand only have one express bowler in the squad and he's the least accomplished of the lot, yet they happily roll sides every other week.

How good was Kane when they brought in short covers so he hit it over their heads
In his top three ODI innings imo. His only mistake was to trust the tail against Starc but that seems to be a team plan. Watling and Ronchi have both marshalled the tail in the past by showing faith and it would be a very McCullum thing to do for the team orders to be everyone is expected to hold their own no matter what.

That attitude is part of the reason why this team is so good tbf.
