5th Match - Ireland v West Indies

Flem274*

123/5
It would be so great if Ireland, Zimbabwe and Afghanistan sneak through to the quarters. It would spark lots of "death of various teams and cricket in general" articles but it would be the opposite - despite the best attempts of the BCCICC and the Evil Big Three Alliance to keep the party to themselves the lesser countries are still getting better.

It's not out of the realms of possibility. Zimbabwe put in a strong showing against the best team in their pool and India are just one batting failure away from game on. Pakistan are in a rut and the West Indies need to pick themselves up fast. In the other pool England have a proud history of finding novel ways to screw up ODI tournaments and Bangladesh have one of the worst fast bowling attacks in the competition. Plus Aus/NZ/SA/SL could just have a really bad day at a really bad time.

It's highly unlikely but I believe!

A freak result and also a very unfortunate one for the game, more often that not a minnow like Ireland would fall well short of such a target, a plucky effort from them.

West Indies now need to win one of the matches against a Test playing team, (Pakistan would be most likely) and order would be restored thankfully we don't have the 2007 where a minnow has one good day and get rewarded by an extra few weeks in the tournament where they take beating after beating and make a mockery of the tournament.

Must've been why a) so many tipped them to do it and b) it happens every four years. Some humble pie is in order instead of ignorant arrogance and patronising.

Unfortunate? What planet are you on. It shows that you treat tournaments and opposition with less than their due respect, then you get beaten. West Indies were not unfortunate, Ireland were with bat, ball and in the field - the better team. That's not unfortunate, buddy.

Only 10 teams in 2019? Looks like BB will get his wish in four years time. Unbelievable that this could be Ireland's last Cup for a long time.

I'd rather see Ireland take a beating in the knockout rounds than see a West Indies team which played so poorly today qualify.

And you do know that Ireland have one of these "freak" results in every World Cup they play right? Funny how that works. This is their 5th win in the last 3 World Cups.

If the ICC stick with the proposed 10 teams for 2019 I shall boycott it and not watch a single game.

Since 1996 when West Indies slipped up v Kenya they gave always done ok against the minnows, their recent form has been bad but that shouldn't matter against a non Test Playing team, afterall Joyce is no AB and Mooney is no Steyn or Morkel.

Ireland themselves lost to Scotland last week as well as Bangladesh so it's not like this result is exactly the start of a great new team because it isn't. I don't see ireland beating any other Test playing teams in their group, so providing West Indies can, order will probably be restored, still something for the Irish players and fans to tell their grand kids about in years to come, but ultimately this result will be insignificant as far as the tournament goes.

Such an embarassing cliche to call a performance from an associate/minnow "plucky" too. They just outplayed West Indies comprehensively in all 3 departments. But no... they're not really better... we'll just call the performance "courageous" and "plucky" and insinuate that they scrapped through. :thumbdown

Let's face it, they owned the Windies today.

I tell ya, I would have been going for them anyway but I am so going to be on Irelands wagon on the 10th March.

BB, apart from speaking absolute bollocks, you are setting yourself up for the biggest tasting in history here. India beating Ireland based on what I've seen from them this summer in Oz is be no means a certainty. Cricket has a funny habit of shutting large mouths.
