Nah **** off it was a mess. It was just run by a bunch of WWE guys. Look at the final Survivor Series match.

The fact it was over and worked with them bundling it (look at the Invasion PPV numbers, were huge) means they'd have absolutely made a **** load of cash if they did it even remotely well.
Yeah I'm with you.

Disclaimer out the way first - though the angle sucked, the match quality throughout was top notch.

But there was so much wrong with it. Who knows how much truth there is in Vince wanting to make WCW a brand but networks wouldn't carry it (it is believable) and in his hand being forced by the unholy mess that was Bagwell V Booker. With all that being said, the best thing to do would have been either wait, or pay off the contracts of Sting, Hogan, Nash, Hall, Flair, Rey etc and get it done properly.

I mean if you wait - you can still absorb the WCW midcard guys into the WWF roster and then when you have the full force available, have them start appearing, WCW guys carrying their titles, whatever. Bang, invasion.

But either way, it could have worked so much better.

And then you've the whole ECW aspect. The fact that ECW sided with WCW is just stupid when you think about it. Heyman hated WCW and WWF helped ECW out plenty of times (for their own good, obviously, but). If you wanted ECW involved, have them on their own IMO.

mate of mine downloaded some podcast or video journal sometime with Cornette going through piece by piece how he'd have booked the invasion. I mean Cornette is not really with the times but from what I remember his version was way better than what we got.

Can see why a young kid who's still totally into it from a mark's perspective would have enjoyed it though

Truly one of the greats.. Of all the people who made their name properly in WCW then went to WWF/E, there's probably only Jericho who's had more success.

Benoit - disqualified anyway before being a horrible woman and child killer before I come with an argument to back up my claim
Guerrero - possibly ahead of Rey, as Rey's first title reign was basically in honour of Eddie. But Rey came back and won the WHC again, and the WWE title (granted it was for an hour and the title was in a disputed state at the time, but whatever), and was always near the top of the card and having great matches. I mean in 09/10 when he was easy past his best he put on absolute classics with Jericho, Morrison (one of the best TV matches of the past 6 or 7 years IMO) and Punk.

Can't think of anyone else to contest this but am probably being dim

EDIT - Big Show, obv.

Oh wow, he's only 40 though?
Actually thinking on, I didn't read that he was retiring but that he was likely to get his release from WWE and then go wrestle for that luchadore promotion or whatever it is. But it was on 411 I read it so it's probably drivel.

The invasion sucked dick. But it was still fun as hell to watch somehow. It could be been literally the greatest thing ever though.

And the ecw thing pissed me off so much. The debut of ecw as a faction was phenomenal and when Heyman cut that promo I was going nuts thinking if the possibilities. Then Stephanie says she owns ecw. **** off.

Wouldn't be surprised if he did retire. He hardly goes a couple of months without getting injured nowadays. His knees are worse than Harris'.

We should have two wrestling threads IMO, one for old wrestling and one for new

This is purely for selfish reasons now that I'm watching 700 hours of old wrestling a week and today opened this thread to read a Raw spoiler (only a small one admittedly) and likely won't see Raw until towards the end of the week

Rey was more impressive athletically in WCW and early WWE run, but storytelling etc got better and better as he got older. The Jericho and Punk feuds really were off the charts.

Shawn was the same really. As he became less capable of certain feats he more than made up for it pscyhologicallu.

Remember the Dominic angle? So awesome.
Lol Michael Cole trying to sell that angle was hilarious.

"For the first time ever, ladies and gentlemen, we have a ladder match...for the custody of a child"

The match itself was actually really good iirc, apart from the bit where Dominic got in the ring and tried to push the ladder over, only for Eddie to push him into the corner and threaten him with a beating... Weird tstl

Eddie and Rey did a great job all things considered, but on the whole this is one of the dumbest angles of all time imo.
