Think part of the problem is that SL don't have any real specialist hitters or middle order batsmen - they are all top order style players, and it's the younger ones batting out of position, getting Matthews back will be a big boost. The guys further down the order are all-rounders who are out of touch with the bat

Yep. He had played two ODIs before they picked him in the World Cup squad -- both in 2011, one against Scotland and one against England in which he scored 4.
If he was a chance to be picked in the World Cup squad he should've been playing a lot more in the last two years. I realise he was Plan B once Kusul failed but when you're rotating players in and out of the side as much as Sri Lanka were, Plan B for for an unproven young opener definitely should've been explored. It absolutely reeks of "oh he scored a Test ton, lets get him in the ODI side too".

Remember the talk before the test was about picking an opener for the world cup if the did well in the 5 day games?
Serves them right for picking a guy who got a slow 150 in a test thinking "he can bat".
