Ya Latham will probably lose out to Elliot@5, but we don't have many options do we? At least he gets us 15-20 runs most of the time, that's better than Guptill's latest efforts. Let's just hope Guptill gets his mojo back soon, he wins us games if he's in form.

What's the par score in Dunedin?

I'm a little concerned about Guptill as well, and mostly about what's going on in that head of his, but let's not fool ourselves that Latham is any good at ODI level.

Probably one of the worst records going around for top order batsman in the top 8 sides.
He hasn't been batting in the top order though, has he? He's been coming in at 5 which is arguably the most difficult position to bat for an inexperienced batsman in the ODI format. Guptill's had an easier go at things and has a comparable record over this year, despite hitting a century.

Latham's in the squad because the selectors and anyone with two eyes knows he's quality.

The fact Guptill's had a terribly below par year (by his own standards) is not a point in Latham's favour.

You want to claim Latham's a no. 5, then fine. Let's even ignore his poor average of 24 for a moment. Name me some other no.5s in the top 8 sides with a SR of 72?

no, I'm claiming Latham's an opener or number 3 at the lowest who's had to bat out of position at 5 because we lack batting depth.

Ok, let's try another exercise then. Name me any other batsman (1 through 5) in the top 8 sides with a worse SR (qualification 10 matches).

Every case for Latham I've seen has either been a) he can cover a lot of positions b) he's not in as poor form as Guptill/Elliott/Player X

Why?

- he's been batting out of position
- he's been playing in the UAE and different places and different bowling attacks than other batsmen around the world
- he's come in in different parts of the game with different batting partners

There's zero point in looking at records in this situation when I can just use my eyes.

Finally finally got hold of a half-decent stream.

Such a lovely venue, or seems so on TV. Looks like Lanka haven't made the most of these conditions.

Because no other ODI batsman has been batting outside their ideal positions, playing in the subcontinent & having to bat with different partners?

There's zero point in looking at records in this situation when I can just use my eyes.
I mean you can keep repeating that he's talented like a mantra, and not sure anyone would disagree that he has talent. But at what point will you concede he's not quite ready to be a successful ODI batsman just yet? I mean 'actual achievement/performance' does count for something doesn't it?
