Guptill in at 150/3 would make him a #5, and he's the anti-#5 for ODIs imo. Just can't nurdle it enough.

He's an opener or at worst a #3, or bust. Kane and Taylor are perfect where they are.

We're one player who can rotate the strike away from having a complete team on paper. Taylor needs runs though.

Ross is most likely to score runs when the chips are down in a big game or he's pissed off.
When it comes to playing under pressure...I'd take Williamson over Taylor every day of the week thanks very much, unless you're just meaning a slog-feast in the last couple of overs.

Talking of NZ's line-up - didn't realize that Corey Anderson has such an amazing record after ~20 innings.. how about Anderson + Baz opening? If that fires it will make everything easier. I have a feeling Anderson prefers pace on the ball anyway.

The first five and a half years of Taylor's test career were an exhibition of performance under pressure because only he and Vettori could hold a bat.

Well Ryder could when he wasn't dropped, injured or otherwise Ryder'd.

The ODI batting has also been very dubious at times.

Hey Phlegm, we both posted basically the same thing in reply to the same post, then liked each other's posts.

High five?

Anderson has a decent reputation v spin.

May all be Bradburn lies though if listen to Flem and Kippax.

Nah, Anderson prefers medium pacers and darty spinners. He can really struggle against spin when he can't read it from the hand (see: Narine), but if knows what's coming down he has excellent footwork to the spinners. That's his strength.

Guptill is definitely an "open or don't play" guy IMO. There's just no way he has the game for the middle overs of an ODI; he's always struggled at that stage even when he's set on 40 odd when it arrives. That stage is all about strike rotation and manipulating good deliveries. If Williamson is to open you're either playing both Latham and Elliott as middle order batsmen or you're playing Vettori or Nathan McCullum somewhere in the top seven. In other words it makes more sense to just either open with Guptill or Latham.
You're probably right on him being best suited to opening, though I would argue that Guptill definitely has the game to bat through the middle. For some reason his efforts in this game always lead me to believe that he has the potential to fill the role well.

I think my biggest problem is with Guptill playing the banker in subserviance to a swashbuckling McCullum. His technique and confidence just aren't up to it at the moment. Would prefer him opening with KW, and playing his aggressive, T20 role, with McCullum shuffling down to either 3 or 5. Though there are problems with that option as well.

Basically, as I mentioned previously, our batting is a big problem and as such we're probably not going to win the WC.

So does that mean he's going to be good vs Herath and Sena here? Or does it have to be part-time type spin?

He should be good against them in theory. He struggles if he can't read a spinner from the hand, but Herath and new-action Senanayake aren't really about deception from the hand.

There's no point moving KW around when you have a mini KW in the squad who could easily perform the strike rotation role that biffer Baz needs at the other end.

In pointless news, Sanga needs 8 more fifties to get to 100 ODI 50s.. I almost want him to not push on after getting a half-ton from here on just to see that happen before he retires.

Malinga the obvious replacement for Jeevan.. legspinners rarely give you control and SL need Thisara's potential finishing.
