If Elliott top scores in this game instead I'll be fuming. I definitely don't see it happening though; all the stars have basically aligned for him to fail here.

Wouldn't be the worst move, his most successful stint in the side was at the top of the order, appears to be a much better ODI player in the SC though, only good for chasing low scores in these conditions most of the time

Poor innings again from Taylor. That SR isn't good enough if you're going to get out.

Great chance for Elliott though, I betting he'll be busier than Taylor.

Not seen anything in this series, not even Hagley or Eden Park, that we're going to produce anywhere the totals required to win a World Cup. One effort to win a quarter-final maybe, but not 2 and definitely not three.

Taylor's form is just a massive concern. And unfortunately it's not like he can bounce ideas off Martin Crowe to right himself like he has so often in the past. I'm backing him to come back into form when it counts, but he's running out of time.

Herath is way more tonkable, is probably just as good at quickly getting through middle overs when the pressure isn't really on and also the better wicket-taker in many ways but Senanayake's ability to get through cheap overs in tough situations with the consistency he does is immensely valuable, more so than Herath IMO

Ross is most likely to score runs when the chips are down in a big game or he's pissed off.

Which means NZC missed a trick by not forcing him to post on CW during the Blocky age. He would have crossed 300 in an ODI. Twice. In a week.

Seriously think there's something to Blocky's call to KW opening - although it would be risky against the stronger seam attacks. Guptill would be much more easily able to channel his YOLO instincts if he comes in 150/3 off 30 than he currently is. On the other hand, if he comes in a 60/3 situation like today things could get disastrous. Still, plenty of time for him to come right and all that.

Agree 100%. I was certainly under a false sense of security after winning the series in the UAE without 2-3 guns and was contemplating how good we'll be in our own conditions.

The reality is we just don't have enough good ODI batsmen to go all the way. If we did have Jesse & both Guptill & Taylor were in red-hot form, then we could genuinely say we had 5 proper ODI batsmen, and I'd give us a decent chance, but as it is we're lucky to have 3.

Suddenly I'm even looking at the Windies batting line-up with a bit of envy.

I can still see us making the quarters or semis (at best), but no further.

I think you're underselling the NZ line-up a bit. SL have the world's best ODI slow bowling arsenal - basically kryptonite to NZ. They will look much better vs teams that are more pace-heavy.

Guptill is definitely an "open or don't play" guy IMO. There's just no way he has the game for the middle overs of an ODI; he's always struggled at that stage even when he's set on 40 odd when it arrives. That stage is all about strike rotation and manipulating good deliveries. If Williamson is to open you're either playing both Latham and Elliott as middle order batsmen or you're playing Vettori or Nathan McCullum somewhere in the top seven. In other words it makes more sense to just either open with Guptill or Latham.
