England thread

I hate how entrenched Bopara has become in this team. He has profited so much from our abysmal play in ODIs.

Maybe if this was held in Asia. As it is....
Yeah beating Zimbabwe shouldn't disguise how useless they have been in the shortest format for a while now.

The other problem for Bangladesh is, even if they beat England its no cert they will qualify ahead of them. Bangladesh you suspect like Ireland are probably only likely to beat one of the supposed top sides and even that is a long shot. The likes of England could still win enough games to pip them.

I feel like it's more likely to be Afghanistan than Bangladesh to knock England out should it happen.

Yeah, this is why I wasn't 100% on lynching Cook and feeding his ashes to Piers Morgan. He was **** for 18 months but he still showed more as an ODI opener in his three years than Bell ever did, and the latter is about to play his 3rd world cup to Cook's none.

I'd probably still go with Bell though. I like the idea of a more solid batsman if Moeen is going to tee off from ball one.

bell's always done his best work in ODIs as an opener anyway, he's deadweight in the middle as far as I'm concerned.

how this matches up with cabinet's statement i'm not sure, beyond the obvious. i just don't think he's a very good middle order ODI bat.

Don't think anyone wants Bell in the middle order and they won't be thinking about selecting him there. Given the squad selected I'd definitely open the batting with him and Ali. Ali and Hales as an opening partnership has 30-2 written all over it.
You might have Bell at 3 if Hales did well in the warmups and Taylor failed.

England need Bell to have a good world cup if they want to do well. England need to setup the games for Morgan, Buttler and Bopara to really accelerate in the last 15 rather than leaving them to rebuild. Bell is the best bet in the squad to score consistent runs at the top of the order against the good teams imo.

At the top of the order in the last 2 years he's averaged 42@82 and I reckon you'd take that tbh.
He's never going to butcher an attack or win you a game inside the first 10 but with Ali at the other end I don't think we need it and Bell's certainly less often to give it away cheaply than Hales.
In fact Bell's basically perfect because unlike Cook who will bat and bat until he gets to his ton and sometimes gives you that uneasy feeling that it'd almost be beneficial if he got out soon, as soon as Bell gets into that sort of territory he chips it to cover and lets the 'finishers' do their job.

I blame the press for making this stuff still relevant tbh. Of course when KP is going to be on commentary they're going to ask him questions but it's nothing we haven't heard before so why does it make the headlines.

I think trying to say Morgan wants him in the side is poor form though. He doesn't know that and it can't help Morgan do his job working with lots of people who don't want KP around.

England will definitely get through to the quarter finals, no disrespect to Bangladesh but apart from beating up Zimbabwe they have been useless all year. If if was in the SC, I'd be worried, but not in Australia. Its not the most absurd thing to think that England could win a game or two against South AfricaSri Lanka or Australia either which would render any loss to Bangladesh meaningless.
There is no chance that England will get close to beating South Africa in pool play

"No chance" is an understatement tbh. SA look very brittle, and England have two bowlers capable of making them have a very bad day.

He's saying that they are in different groups so there is no chance of Eng beating SA in the group stages (although I dunno why he's decided to bring up a post from 3 weeks ago)

Least that's what I assume he's saying.
