There are really no decks in Oceania in which playing a second spinner ahead of one of the many good fast bowlers NZ has would be a good idea, particularly when both spinners are just economy bowlers. If NZ want to play both spinners then Nathan McCullum needs to bat in the top seven.

Yeah, can't think of any such international wickets in Australasia these days. Something like Eden park circa 1998-2000 would be a track for two specialist spinners.

Vettori at his best is easily able to bowl power play overs just as well as whoever the 3rd seamer might be (it seems like McCleneghan at this point). I think it's going to come down to whether McHesson thinks there are certain teams that we can troll with some non-spin. Small boundaries are a factor and it's not as if any teams are terrible at spin these days, but if we play England for example they might like the option.

It does leave them short on wicket-taking though, agreed.

Boult was picked ahead of Southee and Mills in the first ODI v Sri Lanka. So where does Boult stand? Is his place in the starting eleven for WC pretty much a certainty? Thats disappointing if it is the case.

Imo Southee should be playing each and every game in the WC.

Nah he wasn't picked ahead of him at all. They're giving him game time to develop, because he's one of the least experienced.

Southee could come into the side having played zero cricket for a year as far as the selectors are concerned - he's numero uno.

Fair enough regarding giving Boult a bit of game time. But does that actually mean selectors want him in the eleven for WC?

I hope Southee is given enough game time too. I'd be surprised if the 2nd leading wicket taker of the 2008 U-19 WC and 2011 WC is made to warm the bench for the big event.

The current pecking order

Southee
daylight
Mills
McCleneghan
Milne
Boult

However, Mills and Boult are seen as the candidates to partner Southee as the opening bowlers, and would definitely not play as 3rd seamer. Milne and McCleneghan are more in line for the 3rd seamer role (although could cover the opening slot in a pinch).

Fair enough if you think Southee is the no.1, but 'daylight' ahead? Really?

Not sure how you figure that based on NZ's ODI bowling stats in the last 2 years. Apart from Henry's amazing numbers, there doesn't really appear to even be a real stand-out, some have better averages/strike-rates & others better ERs..... It's it's not all that different in the last 12 months either.

It's not bad...he may even be our no.1 based on those numbers coupled with the fact he bowls at the death....but it ain't daylight in anyones language.

Btw, as much as Mills sucks at the death compared to his opening 6-7overs....he has still bowled then when he plays and has a better overall ER than Southee.

Not saying Mills is better, just questioning this 'Daylight' thing.

Yeah I'm still a Mills believer, just explaining why Southee is our best despite the figures.

batting looks fine

bowling attack isnt sorted yet. this would be my bowling attack

Adam Milne/Kyle Mills. Milne has been expensive, and is over rated, with a odi ave of over 50. mills is much more proven.
grant elliot
tim southee - first on team sheet
Mitchell McClenaghan - second on team sheet

I'd like to see this team for a game, after that Elliott/Latham to get rotated at the #5 position and we drop a spinner*

Guptill
McCullum
Williamson
Taylor
Anderson
Ronchi
NcCullum
Vettori
Mills
Southee
McClenaghan

*unless a spinner scores a boatload of runs
