***Official**** Sri Lanka in New Zealand 2014/2015

The Sri Lankan batsmen were really poor this series and you can't help but feel they were the ones who cost their side victory in Wellington. The pitch had lost most of that green tinge by their first innings and Kumar needed some support from the rest of his team, if he had this then they could have gone on to build a considerable lead and really hammered the point home. They also should have had a better crack in the second innings but they just didn't offer much once Sangakkara was given out which is poor. If you take away Sangakkara's contribution in this test then the rest of the Sri Lankan batsmen scored 344 runs for 18 wickets, averaging 19 runs per wicket. It really isn't good enough and perhaps some of their developing batsmen need to look at doing some travel during the Sri Lankan winter to get some more experience on overseas pitches

Given we were able to score about 400 with him doing **** all in the second dig at christchurch I can't say I totally share your concerns, the bowling was a much greater concern for mine

Agree here although would point out that in three out of the four innings, Sri Lanka had New Zealand under bigtime pressure with the ball and would've been under more pressure had they held a chance. I think Angelo Matthews had it right, the fielding was the biggest problem as they dropped a number of easy chances in situations that would have turned the match, while New Zealand had a number of amazing takes and only really two bad misses in the series that weren't capitalised on. ( Ross Taylor dropping his customary sitter and McCullum dropping another sitter )

I was impressed by Pradeep, looks like he's bowling as well as he ever has, I also think Kaushal is going to be a pretty good spin bowler in the coming years even though his figures might not show it here in NZ. Sri Lanka desperately need to find a couple of decent seamers in these conditions and work with Vaas to get the ball swinging. The next biggest thing is to work on their fielding and not give so many chances to batsmen like McCullum or Williamson.

The amazing thing about Williamson is that he's only 24.. someone like Sanga was not near his class at that age. The challenge is to keep improving though.

The batting was poor this test but they did better overall than I expected . I agree that the bowling was the real problem. Especially cconsidering the pitches were pretty helpful. Similar to our pacers' issues... Get wickets when it's a greentop but become totally toothless once it flattens out .

.
Some who miss the 15 will still feature in the upcoming nine ODIs against Sri Lanka and Pakistan to keep the incumbents fresh. Edgar said this week that McCullum, for example, would sit out some ODIs while the fast bowler rotation will continue which means Henry will likely be seen in black this month even if he misses the cut today.

Taylor not playing in the first ODI so the batting line up will probably be

Guptill
McCullum
Williamson
Elliot
Latham
Anderson
Ronchi
4 bowlers

The more I see Elliot's name in the team, the more I like it. Feel as though they don't know for sure who's a better punt out of Latham and Elliot, so they're using this series to find out. And of course Elliot gives the team a different balance if BDK can't bowl.

Great, so we select the 15 man squad, so now let's play the likes of Henry & Neesham in the build-up and rest Taylor. Go Figure.

This is just going to be so annoying if Henry kills it now.

I fully expect him to out bowl Milne, Mills, Boult and McCleneghan during the series.

Also, Ross taking a rest after already having a rest? Far too easy, I'll leave that ball for the keeper.

Was Jan 8 the actual deadline for all sides or could we have actually waited long enough to gauge form from 1-2 games starting on Jan 11?

Because it was definitely his decision and we know he insisted on having a rest so he could go get some k fry right?

Yeah Taylor's become to cricket what Angel Cabrera is to golf, obvs.

He'll shoot a sloppy pair of 75s in the Agribiz.com Classic if you force him to play, then he'll irritate all the Americans, or the guys with the Blocky and Danny Lee work ethic, by casually winning another one of their majors.

Yeah deadline for all sides as I understand it, Sri Lanka certainly would've liked a couple of games to make a few tweaks as well

Elliott... Far out, I thought NZ cricket was past that. I put my money on him not making the next squad after the world cup.

I can understand the reasoning of wanting more a batting allrounder over Neesh. But I would have preferred Munro, Mitchell or even Santner over him!

Ah well good on him, if he gets a chance against a decent team he might be good for a 30 odd.
