***Official**** Sri Lanka in New Zealand 2014/2015

Personally I would've declared with like 8 overs left, prefer to give the batsman a period where they can't accomplish anything.

Still can't believe Baz declared. wag.

Why do you think he's given SL a bigger sniff than he gave India last year? More fearful of India's batting, or has more faith in his bowlers now?
Yeah, maybe that, but probably also because in that match they rescued the situation from the most hopeless abyss... here, while it's a great comeback, I didn't think NZ were totally out of it when the partnership began. That just took a lot out of Baz and Watling and the others emotionally I think.

Nah it is. Everyone was applauding Kohli and Vijay but saying we didn't deserve to win because of how we let things drift in the field and how toothless the bowlers were. Same thing here. It's all just hindsight. I guarantee if Kohli had got us home, there'd be few who would've said anything. about India deserving it or not.
eh, that was after you'd already lost, though. subtle difference imo.

The latter. We are a team that has a bit of belief now. We aren't looking to prove ourselves to the big boys, we're making a statement that we are one of the big boys.

Defensive captaincy trolling your opposition into a declaration does not deserve to win no matter what happens.

You of course may have a different opinion but I don't. Especially after what I was seeing from Mathews from lunch onwards.

an "undeserved" victory >>>>>>>>>>>> an honourable draw/defeat

i do feel like this is stating the obvious, but really. who gives a **** whether you "deserve" to win or not after you chase down 390 in the 4th against a quality attack.

Ok, so Angelo the captain doesn't deserve a victory.

What if Angelo scores 170 and takes SL home by 1 wicket? Does Angelo the batsman not deserve a victory then

You've missed the early part of the conversation.
It's my criticism of McCullum's declaration that's why I say that SL don't deserve to win this. That's one of the criteria I use to define when/if a declaration should happen. If SL won this match, would they genuinely have been the better team over 5 days? The answer is no, IMO.

Also, there's an "honourable victory" option there - or there was at lunch. And I'm not even in the prepared-to-lose camp in the slightest.

Sri Lanka deserve the win if they get there - 390 in the 4th innings in 110 overs would be a hell of a performance in away conditions. But the problem is we've left our best bowler out in these conditions.

Betfair says:
NZ 49%
SL 12%
Draw 39%

Numbers say:
NZ 44.5%
SL 10%
Draw 45.5%

This just got interesting.

i don't understand how you incorporate that into your decision making as a captain beyond "how do i maximise the team's chances of winning whilst not taking undue risks" but ok

Yes, Sodhi with his wrong 'un would cause problems.

Forgive him, it's a New Zealand thing... we want everything to be stacked in our favour, it's why we only ever really support the All Blacks in terms of proper turn out to matches/games.
