Walmsley was one of the quickest guys I faced, he just tended to be very erratic in terms of what pace he'd turn up and bowl at, combined with how erratic his line and length was. That would've been an interesting attack to get some licks in against. I'd dare say Mills aside, you'd get a lot of **** balls to score against if you were good enough against the good balls.I know I'm a homer but at one stage Howick Pak had Andy McKay (who touched close to 150km in his younger wilder days) Kerry Walmsley, Mitch, Millsy and Greg Morgan who all operated in the 130s and above in some cases. Batting at training was tougher than in a game, which is probably why we produced the de Boorders, Colins, Mark Craig etc.
I'd still stick to the point though that as a general rule, the pace in Auckland is much lower than other areas I've played in. It might have something to do with how **** the majority of cricket wickets are here compared to other places. The other thing that baffled me at first was how most players up here didn't know how to swing a ball, nor cut a ball off wickets. A lot of the bowlers here bowl seam up and get the odd one to nip but no consistent swing/movement.
Hamilton, almost every single bowler you come across swings the ball one way or the other and quite a few of them bowl a decent cutter as their variation.
