Browsing through the cricinfo commentary, it strikes me that Southee had a dreadfully unlucky day. He was beating the bat about twice an over after the 2nd new ball was taken, and created a hell of a lot of edges and lbw shouts. One of these days the damn will burst and he'll grab 8/20 or something like it.

I'd say it was generally a day of poor luck for New Zealand, in that the quality of the bowling probably didn't translate fully into wickets taken.
Lead of 99, NZ win by 9 wickets.

Our tail can be decent when they have someone to bat for, I'm backing Kaushal, PJ and Eranga to give Mathews some support tomorrow should he hang around, Prasad is extremely hit and miss and Lakmal is a poor batsman, everything depends on Matthews though, if he hangs around and is the 9th or 10th wicket to fall I suspect our lead will be over 150, if he gets out relatively early our tail could well fold

SL used to have one of the most frustrating tails to knock over, this one however is easy. Lead will be around 50 - 100 at most.

Considering for most of the day SL were being very passive I'd say that's a good thing. In order to get wickets from batsmen in a defensive mindset you have to tempt them to open up a bit.

Depends how they bowl, but if we are defending anything under 300 our attack shouldn't have the penetration to worry you guys on a pitch that should be playing pretty well, I'd like to think we might try and put it in the right areas this time though,

Good effort from our boys to hopefully avoid an innings defeat.in a way I am glad that we got blown away in the first innings as it has shown some of out batsmen how to change their game to bat on this type of wicket. NZ still odds on to win but glad we showed some fight following on..

This game further enforces the fact to me that the follow-on should be seen as a dead and buried concept for teams unless there are weather issues that mean they have to chase a shorter victory.
In the second match I'd love to see our fascination with playing a spinner on any surface irregardless of whether or not it suits them to end and for us to bring in Doug Bracewell in Craig's spot. It won't happen but I think having Bracewell there would've curtailed this match a lot sooner than is now the case.

Didn't strike me as a great starter, like he's going to get out a hell of a lot between 0-20 unless it's a road.
And I know this was discussed elsewhere, but he most likely would have been swallowed on 10 by a Test player. Is there another professional sport in the world where non team members are placed in a position of responsibility? It's no wonder you grab at a catch when it's the only thing you're placed there to do.
