If there is a 'group' weakness in the current NZ side, it is that the backup cast of Wagner/Craig/Neesham are a loose pressure releasing group who have the potential to undo the good work of the opening pair.

Not usually an issue if the opening pair make inroads, but if they have a tight but luckless spell then you can sense the easier times ahead.

Yes, I probably underrate Wagner. And I definitely have Craig still in the jammy category despite two MOM overseas winning performances.

Boult looks like he's put on 5 clicks from last summer.

I wish we still had O'Brilliant. He's different enough from Southee and Boult but also keeps the pressure on and takes wickets and can win games. I don't mind Wagner but O'Brien is still the better player in my eyes because he was a bit tighter.

Wagner's a good bowler but there's a clear reduction in the danger level when he comes on for Southee or Boult.

Southee has been quite slow this morning. Ok only just started this spell, but plenty in first spell only in the high 120s

Getting Karu would be ideal since getting Mathews is tricky and having Thirimanne at the other end would be better but I also want Karu to do well.

Lol come on guys - Boult hasn't put on 5 clicks, he's bowling with the wind. Southee was bowling into the wind, hence around 5 clicks slower.

Re: Wagner; he's averaging 25 this year. Yes he's largely avoided the tough places to bowl and yes he's fed of Southee and Boult's pressure, but let's not go all England with our selection policy here.

Thirimanne is a very slow starter, but I've seen him hurt sides pretty quickly when he gets going, Sydney 2013 comes to mind, I'm hoping this will be a break-through innings for both him and Dimuth.

This fightback is pretty good to see, even if it doesn't amount to much it might get some momentum going into the next game, just glad I missed the first 2 days tbh

I think this is already the best I've seen Dimuth play.. I just hope this doesn't mean he's gonna open in ODIs.. 2 matches in and they already want Mahela in the middle order again ffs.. Why not give him time like Kusal?
