Disagree, early 90's Giggs was phenominal. He was the Premier Leagues first world class player, alas it doesn't get remembered too much because its so long ago (both in time and in his career), and because the Premiership was still a much weaker league than Italy and Spain. He was the prototype for Bale now IMO, though replace most of the powerful 30 yarders with 3 defenders on their arse and a neat finish from a tight angle.Agree with Sledger; Pires at his best was better than Giggs. In fact, I'm tempted to say much better than Giggs. I don't think Giggs was ever legitimately the best player in the league at any point in his career whereas Pires actually was. Giggs gets over the hump for his longevity.
Personally don't see how Bergkamp should be ahead of Shearer who was far more prolific. The rest can't really complain but I'd probably go for Ferdinand over Adams.
Yeah, I guess they accounted for Muller winning loads of stuff. It's not even close to being the worst decision in the list though. Pogba over Modric, my god.Guardian had him 5th. Above Aguero and Suarez. I think it's a relatively new phenomenon, post world cup, which has probably happened to most German players bar ones who play for Arsenal, but I think he's probably benefited the most. I don't think he really stands out amongst his Bayern and German peers and I've legit been laughed at for thinking Reus is better.
This. Forget about the career longevity. In his young days he was just special. He had electric pace and just blew by quality defenders like they didn't exist. The dribbling and body swerve at pace was something beautiful to behold. I saw some of the same qualities with Ronaldo but Giggs did it a decade earlier.Disagree, early 90's Giggs was phenominal. He would've walked into the Barcelona or Milan teams of that day.
Apparently their Boxing Day record is shocking. Christmas party must be epic with pies and trifle every year.Newcastle really phoning it in today.
I remember Giggs' career, especially the early days, really well and while he was pretty great for a winger; wingers in those days didn't have the same tactical importance in the team as they've evolved to these days (especially because of inverted wingers). He wasn't ever United's best player (let alone the first world class player in the league) and I'm not even sure there was a prolonged period where he was even their second best player. Seriously; you go through the years and you can name better/more important players for United in each year.Disagree, early 90's Giggs was phenominal. I guess it depends which team you mean but Capello's Milan or Cryuff's Barca? Not a chance. You have to remember by the time Giggs' started to make his mark England's team were really inferior in comparison to the European giants because of the ban, and those particular teams were star-studded. As for the Pires comparison; IMO the only thing Giggs had over him was speed. Pires was more prolific, a better passer, better technically, a more intelligent playmaker in general and just as versatile. He would've walked into the Barcelona or Milan teams of that day.
Not that Shearer is my favourite player; but he was really prolific. If he had gone to Man Utd instead of Newcastle United he probably would have won more; scored as much if not more; and would probably be looked upon even more favourably. As most say, Shearer simply should be in there. I can understand the appeal of the Bergkamp/Henry combo, as it worked wonders, but on individual talent Shearer is the best goalscorer I've seen (Henry not far behind though).
I do kind of agree with Keane missing out. Vieira on fire was the best midfielder I've witnessed, he just did it all. I'd put Scholes over Gerrard - but thats a debate that will never end
If anyones looking for a replacement for Neville, you are criminally underrating him IMO.
