**Official** South Africa in Australia 2014

Bolly blew up in that series and his fitness for 4 and 5 day matches became an issue. I'm too lazy to check my memory but I kind of recall he stopped playing fc matches around that time and for a while after it. His dropping and subsequent absence from the test team could have come about due to that lack of fitness and when he regained fitness found himself up against plenty of new competition for fast bowling spots.

(Incidently, Dougie's 50 Test wickets have cost him only 26 runs each (SR = 48). Why he was dropped by the Australian selectors remains a mystery to me. IMO he has been Australia's best left-arm quick for many years now. Overall, his consistency makes him a better bowler than even Johnson whose Test career resembles a yo-yo. Unfortunately at 33 years Bollinger will remain a wasted talent and a what-could-have-been)
Once more, I'm astounded at how little cricket you've actually watched or followed in the last 10 years.

What happened to Bollinger:

* Was forced to play Champions League.
* Played a Test, got injured for a little while, then when making a FC comeback was pulled out mid-game to play in the First Test presumably.
* But nup, they felt having two left-arm quicks would create too much footmarks for Swann.
* Was recalled after our bowling attack derped it in 2nd innings Brisbane.
* But was underdone, and struggled for penetration.
* Then fell away due to various injuries.

Since then he's come back well, but he was a fair way back in the queue, and yeah.

I have just a differing opinion that's all. During 2006 and 2007 Bollinger and Johnson were both competing for the same left-armers spot in the Australian team. I remember thinking at the time that Bollinger was the superior bowler, and was therefore surprised that Johnson got picked first and subsequently kept Bollinger out of the side for 2 years or so. IMO Bollinger should have got the initial nod over Johnson due to his much better figures in State cricket (as I recall), and Johnson should have been the one trying to break into the National team. In hindsight I still believe that Bollinger, if properly nurtured back in 2006, would have been far more successful overall than Mitchell Johnson and served Australia consistently better. I make no apologies for being a Dougie fan.

That's all well and good, but I'm referring to this point specifically:

Given that the explanation from the selectors was about as clear as you can possibly get -- whether you agree with it or not (and ftr I do think his treatment was ludicrously poor) -- I don't see how anyone who actually followed Australian cricket around the time of Bollinger's dropping thinks said dropping was a 'mystery'.

Huh? He had a good 2006/07, but before that he was lucky to make the Blues side.

Yeah, Dougie's dropping was wrong but it was in no way mysterious.

The commentary was awful. It had some decent potential when Warne was commentating on Tahir's leg spin, but that got ****ed when Healy and Slater (I think) started going on about whether a clearly wide bowl was wide and what a bowl was which went "away from the right hander" ("a bad one" Warne replied)
