We've been quietly sneaking up the injuries for the last few years. Convenient excuse for when we are **** (maybe why its more noticeable recently), but its getting silly.

Had a bit of a tiff with a colleague today arguing that Sol Campbell in his prime was better than John Terry in his prime. Shame we don't have a single Chelsea fan on here to argue with.

Campbell for me, but there are undoubtedly elements of pro-Campbell, and anti-Terry, bias at work.

Both overrated in my view though.

BARNES OUT
I think that Sol was a much more rounded defender, had pace and strength whereas Terry was never very quick but made up for it positionally.

In terms of personality, i think Terry made up for a lot of his shortcoming by being a force of personality and (I know this is a dirty word) leadership. Wouldn't have been half the defender he was if he wasn't that type of player imo.

Was still Arsenal's best defender when he rejoined in 2010 tbh. Not sure if that's a testament to him or to the general awfulness of the other available options at the time, but still.

Despite thinking he was overrated a bit on the whole, I think his leadership and organisation tend to be a bit underplayed. Not a coincidence that the decline of the Arsenal invincibles side, and Kolo Toure suddenly looking considerably more suss, correlated with him missing about half of the matches from his last two years at the club through injury imo. Then again, having Pascal Cygan in reserve probably accounts for a lot of that as well.

Just to clarify, I was the one arguing that it was Sol. My colleague is one of the most annoying Chelsea fans ever.

Yep, also take into account that Terry had Carvalho to clean up for him as well.

Also I wouldn't call him overrated at all. He was imperious for us.

Oh yeah, don't get me wrong, I rate him highly, but I still think the write ups he got/gets are a shade too favourable, in the grand scheme of things. What I mean by that, was that whilst he was in my view pretty much the best English and Arsenal centre back since Tony Adams, he wasn't quite in the elite bracket of top defenders of his era. I've never thought of Terry as belonging to that group either.

To use a wrestling adage, for me Sol was a A- player. The A+ players being Ayala, Stam, Maldini, and most significantly, Nesta.

Worth noting that none of those guys made Sp*rs fans want to commit mass suicide like Sol did. Still hurts them to this day.

edit: He gets an A+ from me for that alone.
