Hard to tell if that was a deliberate attempt at an inswinger, or an old ball with an upright seam just swinging towards the shiny side (which literally any bowler can do).

I only really saw McGrath in the 05 and 06/07 Ashes but wasn't the consensus that he didn't really try to swing? Just bowled with a good seam position and the ball might move.

He was basically so good at what he did he didn't need to do much else than just keep putting it there moving slightly and testing a batsman to the full. Rarely bowled a bad ball to release the pressure and was at you all the time. The only other bowler of the same type as him I have seen was Ambrose but McGrath was better than him.

Yeah if you search out the video of McGrath dismissing Warner in a T20 exhibition game, McGrath's getting a bit of light hearted stick from Taylor and Warne for not swinging the ball much. McGrath's response about not swinging it is 'I never needed to'.

That video's well worth seeking out because it sums up McGrath's genius perfectly. It's in my post on McGrath for my Greatest XI, should be fairly easy to find on YouTube as well.

That this thread has boiled down to McGrath's strengths vis-a-vis Steyn tells us all we need to know where Dale stands. I recently posted this bowling attack in a Today's-XI in the ATG thread -

Marshall
Steyn
Warne
Murali
Miller

Lovely attack... Replacing Steyn with McGrath makes it more elegant though :)

GAGF. The fact that he's being compared to McGrath tells you that they both need to be in and Marshall needs to go take a hike.

I usually go more with a top 5 : MM, Mcgrath, Steyn, Hadlee, Imran. Followed closely by Lillee, Amby, Donald, Trueman, Wasim.
I know that I am going to get hammered for this, and let me preface it by stating that Imran is a definite ATG fast bowler and one of the top 2 bowling All Rounders to play the game, but he averaged almost 26 with a strike rate of 60 outside of Pakistan. Again those are ATG numbers, but not in the discussion as the best ever.

So again for me it's Marshall, McGrath and Steyn who separates themselves from the pack.

I agree with you on Imran but Hadlee deserves to be there with the very best.
