Maybe doing the lad a real disservice but Jos has always struck me a tad.. simple? Not sure what word I want, but not sure he has the edge you quite need to be a successful Test captain.

But they said that about Ali Cook....

Oh right.

Seriously tho just because he smiles and seems polite doesn't mean he isn't captainy material. Who knows?

I wasn't really been serious with the suggestion at present. I was reading a few articles about Gloucestershire and the Buttler article was there and it seemed poignant given the lack of options.

I'm sure every other former school coach of the current team is talking up their former student as a potential eng cap.

How an earth can you get a gauge of whether someone is simple or not based on whatever you've seen of him in the media etc?

Davies ODI dropping was a disgrace tbh.

Same way you could see it with Freddie, Cook. Same way you could tell Nasser was fiery from his press interviews. Buttler hardly ever seems an intense guy does he.

So really how does Dhoni get away with ****ing over the career of a selector's son with such disdain? Any ideas?

I loved it tbh. Was morbidly hilarious watching Binny do literally nothing. If we lost I'd have raged at Dhoni for not using Binny at all, but if it leads to him not playing another test I don't care.

They're so PR savvy these days though,. Not sure it's really fair to compare interviews now with over 10 years ago.

The career should not have been his to begin with, therefore there was nothing to **** over. People say Binny shouldn't suffer for being related to a national selector, but as I say - it takes two to nepote (verb form of neoptism. True story), and so he can GAGF. Besides, one could argue that Binny is too poor a bowler that allotting him overs that could have been bowled by the others would have been detrimental to team interests.

One really couldn't, seeing as we have hardly seen him bowl.

Dhoni survived in 18 months losing 0-4 to England away, 0-4 to Australia away and 1-2 to England at home. He is invincible.

Yeah maybe, maybe you don't need that kind of fire anyway. He just seems a really nice guy, and I don't think they make very good captains.

If we list the great captains of this era:
Ranatunga, Waugh, Fleming, Ponting (some would debate him I know), Smith, Vaughan. Even throw Warne in because of how highly he is regarded by many whom he captained in domestic tournaments.

Fleming aside, none of them are blokes you are inviting out for a beer are they?

Alastair: Hanging on...how do you do it, Dhoni?
Dhoni; One word. Noodz.
Ishant: Yup, can confirm.

Do captains go up in people's estimations as soon as they retire because I can never remember Ponting or Smith being particularly good captains and yet they are regularly mentioned as good captains.

Would definitely have a beer with Waugh, Smith, Warne and Vaughan. If you want nice guy and captain then you want Taylor. Unless that too far back to fit this era.

Graeme Smith was a good captain. Take over SA cricket was in a pretty low place and consistently having them as a good to very good team is an excellence achievement.
