***Official*** South Africa in Sri Lanka 2014

Congrats for being so gracious in defeat as SL have every right to feel hardly done by

After all, Philander tampered with the ball that Steyn used in his match changing spell

Being fined 75% of his match fee seems a paltry penalty for an illegal action that arguably changed the course of the match
thanks mate but as maximas said,it was the loss of Eranga that affected us much more as our fast bowling stocks are limited at best. As i said before, SA are a very good team and they deserved the win by playing the better cricket..i did laugh a bit on mathews comments that the heat affected us a bit tho!!!He was obviously gutted at the lack of application from our batsmen BUT i am not taking anythng away form the superb bowling of the South African pacers when i say that. I know that our spinners picked up wickets but I feel that Mathews missed a trick by not bowling himself a bit more, especially when we lost Eranga. IMO, this would of at least added a bit of variation to what the SA's had to face..

Why else would Philander scratch the ball unless he was sure it would help the bowlers?
Well what I heard the commentators say that it didnt affect the outcome.

Thats why I just asked if somebody had other evidence that they only have...

Given Matthews was unwilling to bowl himself all that much (and plus he's not particularly suited to these conidtions) I think Lakmal needs a proper pace bowling partner. Prasad is more of a hit-the-deck type but Morkel showed you can still succeed with such an approach, plus Prasad might be the impact fast bowler we need to deliver some short sharp spells and make a few breakthroughs, is an ok batsman at home too. Given our two spinners haven't made themselves easy to drop and the Saffers seem to be playing spin quite well I don't think he really warrants a place in the team, probably won't get much assistance from the pitch at SSC anyway.
I would love to watch Prasad have a go, especially with the recent improvement in his bowling. But Morkel's height and pace is a huge factor, Prasad won't be able to trouble the batsmen with shorter deliveries or beat the bat with reverse swing, and the South African batsmen will be happy to face a quick bowler in these conditions rather than a spinner.

How could anyone possibly have evidence? He scratched the ball, that is cheating end of story.

the report on cricinfo says that the evidence was on the footage seen by the match officals at the end of the day. you would assume that unless there was evidence, there is no way that SA and the player would have accepted 75% of his match fee being fined..

I think it's high time for a change in the rules with regards to injury during matches. A proper substitute player should be allowed. Pacer for pacer, batsman for batsman. There are a few reasons to be against it (like the incoming player will be fresh when everyone's exhausted etc) but surely those can be dealt with something like fixing a quota of overs the new guy can bowl.

Relax, there is a poster on here who says Sri Lanka was hard done by, just because of Philander, which \i think is bull.

Based on what was said by the officials and commentators I am trying to understand how this poster came to this conclusion - thats why i asked if he had extra details. It a fair question

Couldn't do it when they weren't aware of it happening.
I thought I heard one of the coms today say the umpires had a look at the ball after it was 'tampered' with and they decided not to change it - I might be wrong though

Bring back the runner as well, just difficult to regulate these things I guess

Agreed and apparently didn't even try to defend himself against the accusation so must have been pretty clear cut

2nd time the Saffers have been convicted of this offense in the last 12 months

Both times they've pleaded guilty in order to get minimal punishment. Does seem a little coincidental that it's only happened to them though...

What exactly was said by the officials?

Any fair-minded SA fan would acknowledge that whilst SA played brilliantly, one of their fast bowlers blatantly breached a rule which is in place to prevent that team getting an advantage when bowling. That is being hard done by.

Cue every Indian player bar Dhoni lining up Ishant's run up with banana peels.

Money talks:
Sri Lanka v South Africa, 1st Test, Galle, 5th day : SLC ensure tampering footage aired | Cricket News | Sri Lanka v South Africa | ESPN Cricinfo

Angelo claiming ball reverse swung more on the third afternoon than the final day.

SA don't really need to do it, they would/could have won fair and square with the bowlers they have. Steyn's comment sounds like he would've preferred if people were talking about his great performance than this - he must have been aware that it was happening though can't see how he wasn't.

Either way, SA has to stop doing this, 3 times in 9 months and the coach saying "we should do it better" is a little pathetic.

I must admit it ruined the victory for me. I would like to believe it was an action of one player but that was hardly the case Im afraid. Really bad to think Steyn is involved in this. Especially when he bowled so well. Plus SA board acting like "no big deal."

Interesting that cricinfo goes to pains to state that both matches were broadcasted by Ten Sports. Are they trying to suggest that it's a conspiracy?
