Why do the Lankan posters rate Thirimanne so much? Tailenders career average (13 tests hardly a tiny sample size either) and looks hopeless (he's probably not that good) against any decent seam.

Just as I post this he gets out playing that stupid open face poke again. Not buying him at all.

I think he will come good in the future he is just in a poor patch of form currently. If you have seen some of his innings in Australia for us,it is plain to see he has the ability.

Yeah that's it, it's nice to see him given an extended run in a settled position, just a shame they also slapped him with the vice-captaincy before he'd really established himself and this period coincides with a poor patch of form. Would like to see him persisted with until the NZ tour but needs runs

Philander has been a disappointment, and not just because of the tampering issue. He did a pretty good job batting in the first innings but his bowling's looked a bit ineffective. Wouldn't mind if Parnell gets a call next test.

I think he's been fine in the second innings. Gave Jayawardene a complete working over outside off stump and it was his pressure that led to Morkel getting the wicket. Not been anywhere near as good as steyn and Morkel but done his job.

Philander is always going to be up against it in these conditions, however if he keeps things tight, threatens with the new ball and contributes with the bat there is no way his spot should be questioned IMO

Agreed. However, I've always been a fan of selecting the team based on the opposition.

Important to try and extend this match as long as possible, keep their bowlers out there in the heat and maybe try to gain some confidence from a good last wicket stand
