We have a chance to win a series and there's rain about. I'll be disappointed if McCullum plays defensive because he's scared of Gayle. Sure, Gayle could win the game on his own because he's a bloody good player but do you want to win the game or not? McCullum should and will back his bowlers to do their jobs because for the most part over the past two years or so they have.

Gayle could nick off first ball and Darren Bravo could score 150 instead. If that happens we still lose. Tim Southee could take 7fer and Gayle could be 50* at the end. Don't bring any imaginary nightmare scenarios into this until they happen. A chase of 300 on the final day of a test is always a challenge provided you have a good attack and we do.

Nice to see Kane dig one out for the team and put us in a match winning position - as good as he's been, he tends to get out and rely on people like Watling and Neesham to press home the advantage. Hopefully this is the start of him converting those 60s, 70s and low 100s into big boys that give us the ultimate chance to win.

I'd look at the weather forecast in the morning and make a decision on how many overs you're likely to get in the day of play. I don't think NZ will get a chance with a second new ball to be honest, due to weather. But also if they bowl well enough, they've got a long tail they're up against, Bravo is injured and we finally have three bowlers capable of taking wickets, rather than just two.

If Mark Craig continues to fall to bits at test level with the ball he could look into his batting. Seems pretty organised and has shown some ability. He has time to do a Redmond/Woodcock and work his way into the top six of a Shield team as a spin bowling allrounder.

Hell if by some miracle we turn over the opener heap and find a successful opening batsman who bowls PS standard spin he'd walk into the test team.

Agree with both arguments above to an extent, i.e. the 'we need 340' vs. the 'declare overnight regardless'. Personally, I don't think there's any harm waiting to see what the conditions look like first. If by some miracle the weather looks fine early doors, I agree with Hendrix and would look to bash quick runs for 5 overs or so and look to bat the Windies out of the game. If the weather looks dodgy, then yes, declare straight away. Personally think the Windies (with the notable exception of Chanderpaul) play worse when they have to just shut-shop and defend. Certainly players like Gayle & Bravo are dangerous for their stroke-play, not their ability to shut-shop to save a test.

Firmly in favour of the overnight declaration here. It's very likely that time will be lost to rain and those extra few overs make a big difference to our chance to push the win. Sure, if by some chance it stayed fine all day and one of the WI batsmen scored big there'd be a chance we could lose, but I can accept that - WI would have to bat very well and their long tail must be playing on their minds. To win this series would be huge for us and if the weather doesn't interfere too much tomorrow I think we have a great chance.

Local weather forecast isn't as bad as the Weather Channel ect. Really looks promising for tomorrow compared to today.

I just don't get why you'd want to give West Indies a sniff. Losing this test would be a disastrous result for the black caps, but a rain affected draw would be fine and probably a fair reflection of an evenly-contested series. And there's still a shot at a win anyway.

Wait until the morning. If there's heavy cloud, get out there and bowl. 300 is probably enough already with five number 10s batting it out for the number 8 spot
