Yes with this pitch having some bounce for bowlers that bend their back and bowl short of a length, Wagner would be a good option. Neesham with his height should be able to take advantage of it if he can maintain some semblance of accuracy.

1) when I saw the pitch in Kippax's photo I knew it was a bowl first pitch.
2) Unfortunately when you are carrying two spinners you always want to bowl last so I knew that McHesson would force themselves to bat first.
3) I think McHesson did the right thing by playing Sodhi - that grass cover looks like it will brown/die off during the test.
4) All this said I would have bowled first anyway and just trusted Neesham to do his best impersonation of a third seamer as possible. He does have an FC average of 32 which is ok and if the pitch was seaming he would have been effective enough.

Tbf to Hesson though we were actually in pretty good shape at the tea break. Ultimately it was some good bowling combined with some poor shot selection that undermined New Zealand later in the day. While there is a bit in it for the bowlers (moreso than the last match anyway), I don't think it was an automatic-bowl first pitch.

Based on both a) the look of the pitch and b) the way it played, it was a bat first pitch. No doubt about it in my mind.

Yeah Latham and Williamson got through the worst the pitch had to offer. After that it should have been plain sailing but the West Indies bowlers found another gear and our batsmen surrendered. The tail had no chance against Jerome Taylor.

When Blocky and WW go at it, I get this mental image of a dog barking at its own reflection in a mirror.

As much as this made me chuckle, I can't help feel it's a tad harsh on Blocky.

Nothing wrong with the decision to bat first for mine. It strikes me as being one of those 'edge it' wickets as opposed to wickets that seem to do too much to get the edge, seems to just nibble around enough. If NZ can just be patient, keep it fullish & not go searching, I'd be surprised if the Windies get much of/if any lead at all. Our only obvious liability is going to be Sodhi and his 1-2 looseners in over when we don't have a lot of runs to play with.
