Herath is a specialist spinner and not too shabby on his day. But I think this generation is spoiled by the exploits of Warne and Muralitharan, those guys were anomalies rather than the norm and even in the case of Kumble and Swann, they were once in a generation talents. It wasn't too long ago you'd see sides happily take four seamers into a game and park the Tim May's and Phil Tufnell's of the world on the bench.
Tend to agree here. Having said that pre Warne - Murali - Kumble - Saqlain era (interestingly debuted between 1992-5) there were few good spinners. Qadir was one of them and we would be fortunate if we could see a Qadir these days. DS de Silva from SL is rarely mentioned, but I believe that he was abetter spinner than all the spinners who are on show in test cricket these days. But seeing too much of above four with a second string of Mushtaq, Harbhajan, Kaneria and Swann has definitely spoilt us.

Was referring to England tbh

Very few teams in history have played 4 quicks consistently and, with the exception of WI, fewer still have gotten away with it

Well, unless Panesar suddenly started bowling well again - I think Robson and Ali are just as likely to take wickets with spin as anyone else.

Most teams only played a spin bowler in spinning conditions and relied on all rounders and part timers otherwise. NZ often played without a specialist spin bowler until Vettori arrived on the scene, Australia often played absent a spin bowler in the days of Tim May until Warne arrived. England would often leave Tufnell out of their side and rely on players like Hick to provide some spin options. It's really only been the sub continent teams that have always had a true specialist spinner in their side throughout all history.

Now-a-days, every side whether or not they have a true test spinning option tends to take one or take punts on one (Ashton Agar, anyone?)

For Christ's sake England, the pitch may be a bit flat, but there's still a long way to go in this match and you're still in a very strong position.

At least show a little bit of energy and intent!

Well done that man. Angelo might be the polar opposite of Steve Waugh as a captain (AM is probably more negative than Cook - if possible), but he's got some of Waugh's mental toughness and attitude. Very useful player.
