Future of Captaincy

Foster in danger of becoming overrated on here. Is really that good a captain? Essex been in division two for an awful long time now and they always have a relatively fancied squad.
You may well be right, and although I've never been tremendously impressed with Cook's captaincy he did seem to be doing a decent enough job till last winter. But his reaction to the Buttler mankading has really hacked me off - very disappointed in him. As for Foster I do think the time has come to give him the gloves and see what Prior does as a specialist bat, if for no other reason than Foster is the first 'keeper I've enjoyed watching just for his keeping since Alan Knott - agree that his captaincy skills are untested at the highest level but he's got plenty of experience, and would be a safe pair of hands - would give Cook a chance to concentrate on his batting as well

Dan, are you basing your view on Kohli's captaincy from his time captaining in the IPL?

Essex have had a **** batting line-up for years. Take out Cook and Bopara and they're mediocre at best. If anything, the current batting line-up is the best we've had in about 5 years. You could be Mike Brearley, but if your batting line-up can't at least occasionally put decent scores on the board, then you're buggered. Mickleburgh, Westley, a host of batsmen who couldn't make it at other counties and couldn't make it at Essex either.

I've never understood why there aren't more wicketkeeper captains.

Because they already have to concentrate and work much much harder in the field than any other player - would be stupid to burden them with more.

I get that, but the other side of the coin is due to the fact that have to concentrate more than anyone else, they know what's happening better than anyone else in the fielding team.

I guess that's why many of them are long term vice captains though.

Yeah this may all be true but we are talking division two here, a lot of **** batting line-ups going about. It may be fair or not but Essex are normally talked about as promotion contenders and they have not done it. If you are really going to bring someone from county cricket into test captaincy they should probably have a pretty damn good record and Foster really does not have that. I mean it is all academic anyway of course because it is something England would never do.

If you're familiar with military leadership structure, the captain is like an officer - sets strategy, takes care of admin (selection), etc, while a wicketkeeper often occupies a similar role to a Sergeant or other non-commissioned officer - motivates the troops, makes sure everyone's happy, is a generally likeable guy and man of the people.

It's not a good idea to have someone who's both making the decisions as well as providing all the encouragement. A captain will tell a bowler a plan; a wicketkeeper will encourage him no matter what.

Not a perfect analogy, just trying to show that there are multiple forms of leadership within team dynamics.

Tell that to the sergeants I had as an Air Force recruit.:laugh:

I basically agree, but I'd describe it more like giving a single player two full time jobs. It's a huge workload for a single player to shoulder. I lasted one season as my high school first XI keeper and captain. Hated it and it adversely affected my keeping.
