***Official*** New Zealand in the West Indies 2014

I've been really disappointed in the pitch. I wasn't expecting much help for the seamers but it's just been too slow for even the spinners to be a real threat without the pitch misbehaving.

Hopefully it starts to deteriorate. That would be a real dog on the West Indies though if it became a win the toss, win the match situation.

I think this was a Wagner pitch.
This idea that Wagner is somehow better than everyone else on a dead pitch is completely wrong.

He had one good series that did admittedly turn me around on him. But Boult and Southee have been taking wickets on dead pitches for the last 2 years. We're talking the University Oval in Dunedin dead. No swing, no seam, no bounce, and not even any turn.

One good series doesn't somehow make him better than those two on flat wickets.

Moreover, this pitch actually has turn. Not fast turn, no, but there is turn there.

Now don't get me wrong, I do think he should've been picked (ahead of Sodhi given the number of left handers the Windies have), but he's not some type of miracle bowler. If we're playing 2 spinners, he is absolutely the guy that should be left out.

Don't really agree with this. I mean, yeah Watling is important, but all he's really done is replaced Daniel Vettori as our lower-middle order banker, and Vettori's presence in the lower-order was certainly not correlated with strong batting performances. The real driving force behind the turn-around has been the blossoming of KW and Taylor in the last 18 months. They (and to a lesser extent McCullum) have ensured that the guys like Anderson, Neesham and Watling have been coming to the crease with 200+ runs on the board and the opposition bowlers tired out.
I agree that he is replacing the Vettori role but in the 12 months between Vettori's injury at Hobart and RSA tour we collapsed so many times from solid positions, the lower and middle would get flusted and get out. Take for example the test at north sound we were 2 for 200 odd in both innings and we were all out 100 runs later with the tail just throwing the bat at the ball.
In the last 15 months since BJ has walked in a dozen times when we were in a mini (like today) or a full scale collapse and the innings has rebuilt around him. BJ absorbed the pressure which calmed down the blokes at the other end, the specialist batsman like Taylor trust him and so they don't go hunting quick runs and throwing there wicket away.

Lastly in every match that he has played in over this period he has been involved in at least 1, 40+ run partnership.

Perhaps, but his best work is done on dead pitches, and instead of some raw spinner like Sodhi he'd have added some good depth to this attack as a determined trier, he's played that role quite well on dead tracks in the past.

Was just having a look at some random things on cricinfo, didn't realise nz had gone up to 6th in the test rankings

Indeed that was noted a couple of weeks ago on CW. It is our highest ranking in many years.

Havn't seen you around before - welcome to CW.

His best work, like any pace bowler, is on green tracks.

Ok so apparently southee is a top ten allrounder, should I take these rankings seriously.
Enyway havent been able to watch much of the test as the hours of play here dont exactly fit my schedule, but from what I have seen the pitch looks dead, its guna be very difficult for both sides to get 20 wickets

Yea, not one eyed though
Yeah we've had a bit of that sort of thing in this thread. I imagine if we climb further in the rankings that will just get worse until people get used to us doing well and how to deal with it.

Personally I have been on this forum for 5 years. During New Zealand's nadir (I think about 3 years ago) we had people telling us to give up hope and that we were idiots for sticking with the team. Lets hope anyway that we have a good result in this series - it sounds like we may need a win in this match if you believe the Windies posters that the next pitches will be brutal (difficult)

6th is about right for nz at the moment, cant see us climbing much higher without at least one decent opening bat and a test quality spinner.
I read the forum alot so I do get the jist on who says what and the general fanboys here.
Bring on a "brutal" pitch, our batsmen have a bit of form and we have a decent bowling lineup, at least it gives a chance of a result both ways

NZ starting to look like a decent test side, poor old Peter Fulton's time is about up, another opener to partner Latham, a quality spinner and pace bowler and the side looks complete. Jimmy Neesham looks like a machine, what a prospect !

Well, it's literally impossible for the West Indies to get 20 wickets now. ;)

No guarantee latham is a long term prospect, but I hope he makes every post a winner.
Mabye some one like matt Henry as a future bowling option, although I don't know what he's like with a red ball.
I think sohdi will have a long stint in the side, there should be something in one of the pitches during this tour.
