Very encouraging from Sanga, class is class..yes he has struggled batting in England but don't forget he can score here, remember his knock in the champions trophy here against England? Shame the others didn't win, but as maximas says, it was a practice game so not bothered..

Is it really? He's a way below it still and surely doesn't have that long left?
He's over 58 at the moment. If he has a big series here in England it could well balloon further and he'll then have some nice home series where you can be sure he will plunder runs. It's definitely possible imo

Home series will be against SAF. Steyn, Morekel and Philander under what ever conditions will not be pushovers.

Yes, he's over 58 but having played so many games he needs a huge effort just to get it up to 60, let alone then maintain it.

He needs 369* to get there or 429.
Average of 96.9 in his next 10 innings
Of 74.76 in 25 or 67.38 in 50 innings.

He's managed to get from about 55 to 58 in the last 2 years by batting like a god, to maintain that against good opposition (it's fair to say that playing Bangladesh a few times has padded his stats nicely) would be some feat, mind you, he's done it before against SA at home and he has a great record against Pakistan too. I'd agree with OS that it's on the cards, but I wouldn't go as far to say it's likely.

I read an article where Sanga refuses to rule out coming back to Eng even for the next tour in 2016 - he will be 39 then. Assuming he retires before 40 which is likely, he has 3.5 years of Test cricket left. SL plays 6 tests this year, how many they play in the next few years is just speculation but most likely 2015 won't see a lot because of the World Cup.

I think it's a fair assumption to think he'd play another 20 test matches before he retires.. the stats required to end with at least a 60 average:

Matches left: 20
Innings left: 34 (assuming 1.71 innings per match as has been the case in his career)
Not Outs: 3 (0.08 not outs per innings)
Runs: 2229
Average: 71.90

He has averaged 69.86 as a non-wicketkeeper so it's possible, but he would have to better that for 3 years+ so I think unlikely.

A good batting display by the Lankans, all the batsmen have spent a bit of time in the middle, will be good for them. The bowling line-up also seems to be doing well. I think Mendis might be just dropped from the final XI, although I would love to watch him. He is picking wickets regularly, but with that kind of bowling, don't think it'll be easy for him to stop the flow of runs. In my opinion he should be playing the whole series, he'll definitely pick important wickets if he gets to bowl a spell of 5-6 overs in one go. But I also think he might get one or two bad matches and might just get dropped. Let's see, if SL wants to go for a more attacking option in Mendis or if they want someone a bit more economical. Lakmal is a big positive for the SL bowling lineup, has improved a lot in the last few months. SL bowling lineup looks pretty strong with Malinga, Kula, Lakmal, Mathews and Mendis. It'll be interesting to see if their batsmen are able to adapt.

Ehh, I know I've said things like this a hundred times, but Mendis has proved on more than a few occasions that in these conditions (like the ones he'll find in the WC) he largely fails to either get wickets or keep runs down. These tour matches are a bit misleading because Mendis is generally at his most effective against players who haven't seen much of him, given the English gave hammered him in Bangladesh and he'll be bowling at many of the same players I think it would be a little irresponsible to pick Mendis. It can be very difficult to be an effective attacking spin bowler in ODIs when conditions don't give you much help, so I suspect (hope) with WC planning being fine-tuned on this tour Sachi will play, given he is the best defensive spin option SL have

i agree that Satchi has to come in ahead of Mendis, not just becuase of his bowling, dont forget he is a decent bat and is easily our best fielder now with Dilly...I an not sure that Mendis will feature as Satchi should be 1st choice with Herath 2nd choice imo..

I agree with you. SL might opt for Sachi as he is generally more reliable in keeping things tight. So he might be the first choice spinner for SL.

Mendis got hammered in Bangladesh because of dew problems, he uses the carrom ball as his stock ball in T20s, it becomes difficult to bowl it with a bar of soap. On the other hand, he was picking regular wickets in the Asia cup and looked very threatening. His economy rate got a bit high because he was even bowling in death overs.

Like I said before, picking or leaving Mendis out should depend on the team combination. Won't completely rule him out.

Herath isn't as good as either Sachi or Mendis as a limited overs bowlers. His performance in a couple of matches in the previous T20 WC was impressive, but overall he hasn't had that impact in the shorter formats.

i disagree becuase what Herath gives us is control for ten overs and that is something that Mendis doesnt..the latetr can take wickets but only if he has a rare good day..i would take ten quiet overs any day as that will generate the pressure needed for the others to pick up the wickets..
