All Formats Draft -- VOTING THREAD

Dan

Howe_zat said:
In brief:

Draft a squad of 12, then post up a line for the five-day, one-day and twenty-over side. Naming your franchise at some point is expected. A voting thread will ask people to vote for three sides, the one that's best in each format. The winner is whoever gets the most votes in total.

As Howe says above, we're looking for you to vote in three categories, each equally weighted, with the team gaining the most cumulative votes being declared the winner.

Best test XI: kyear2
Best ODI XI: Either watson or Blakus. Both extraordinarily good teams but will go for watson for the Garner factor. Closest battle ofthe three imo.
Best t20 XI: Pothas, who could've won the ODI one too for that dream lineup , but thought the bowling wasn't quite as good as the others. For t20, though, just an extraordinary team. Can see them chasing virtually any total.

Hey, isn't a team oming 3rd in all formats better than a team first in 1? This doesn't make sense to me. Get 1st, 2nd and 3rd voted for each format!!

Just make a new thread. This one is hardly off the ground. Team coming 1st in 1 format, and lowly in the others coming above a more versatile side makes a mockery of this draft, IMO.

We can do it in this thread only, mate. By just changing the format to this :

Best Test XI : First, Second, Third.
Best ODI XI : First, Second, Third.
Best T20 XI : First, Second, Third.

Then, while adding the votes we can give 5 points to all teams that got a gold medal, 3 to silver and 1 to Bronze.

I agree that in this way we will get a better evaluation of teams.

T20 = OHNO

Waqar and Bond at their peaks, backed up a plethora of bowling options would be devastating in a T20 IMO. And with that top 4 led by the brilliance of Tendulkar there would be no shortage of runs. While Gibbs and Martyn didn't play a mountain of T20s they played enough games to indicate that they would be in the highest bracket given the opportunity. Rice, Cairns, and Ames were all clean hitters, so no problem there either. Constantine - always good for a run out or two.

ODI = Saint Kopite

Such a rock solid top 5 with plenty of experience and firepower, and with Hadlee coming in at 9 the whole lineup has depth. Hadlee was also a Gold Tier ODI bowler. Add Pollock, Bishop, Razzaq, and Kumble and the attack is exceptional. I always look for a top notch keeper, and Boucher was one of the best in recent years.

Test = Harsh

As much as I dislike Watson (ironic isn't it) there is no getting around the fact that Harsh has selected too many Gold and Silver Tier Test match players. The pairing of Richards and Pollock at 3 and 4 is impressive enough, but then they are followed by Barrington and Clarke. I rate Langer higher than most people, so him at No.1 is not a problem. Also top marks for the bowling attack. Roberts-Steyn-Walsh-Underwood-Watson is a most unforgiving combination. Incidently, I reckon that Roberts in his prime was a faster bowler than either Steyn or Holding. Or at least got more lift, and was therefore more difficult to handle. And of cause Lindsay is the icing on the cake. Again, shame about Watson being in the team, but I think that each Test team has a niggling issue of some kind.

Agree, ridiculous not to do the top 3 for each format.
No argument from me. But we've already had the discussion, and rightly or wrongly Howe stuck by his original OP. So at least he is being consistent which is not a bad thing.

IMO, even with the current voting arrangements I think that we'll still end up picking the best 12 players under all conditions. The winning team will be the winning team because it's an excellent team.

Indeed, and that's what we argued in the thread -- but Howe's initial voting method is what we're going with.

Best Test XI: morgieb
(2. harsh.ag, 3. Pothas)
While Botham was statistically quite rubbish at #6, the pairing of him and Imran is fantastic in this draft. Strong opening pairing, Hammond/Miandad/Shiv are all quality and all correctly placed in the batting order, and a good opening bowling combination of Ambrose and Gillespie with a very good spinner in Swann providing support. Only weak link, IMO, is Smith - but he's hardly a terrible selection.

Honourable mentions to harsh.ag, who would have got my vote if not for Watson the Test Opener, meanwhile Pothas' XI gets a mention for the obvious - Bradman - and the ***y middle order that is Aravinda/Virat/Hussey. Meeting Jono has obviously affected me. Oh and Eddie Barlow - WAFG. Just not quite sold on his bowling.

Best ODI XI: watson
(2. Blakus, 3. kyear2)
The issues that watson's team had in Test cricket aren't nearly as applicable in ODI cricket - Shakib at 6 is a strength, not a weakness vis-a-vis others, while Kapil Dev comes into his own, while in Garner and Bevan he has arguably the two greatest players in their respective positions of ODI history. I'd be going 3. Dravid 4. Gower if I were him, however it's a minor critique. I really like the opening partnership of Greenidge/Waugh as well.

Mentions going to Blakus, while I'm not convinced by Jessop as a 5th bowling option, the rest of his bowling attack is gun and his batting line-up is fantastic, while kyear's team looks good all the way through but doesn't quite grab me as much.

Best T20 XI: Howe_zat
(2. ohnoitsyou, 3. abstain)
Gayle/Warner opening, McCullum, Jayawardene, Taylor - all proven T20 batsmen of serious quality. Dussey is more than good enough in T20 for this team, and is arguably the perfect #6 for this team - dart-y off spin that are better than those of Gayle as sixth bowler, capable of bombing a few sixes at the end of the innings, and fields extremely well. On the bowling front, Shahid Afridi is Shahid Afridi - capable of brilliance. Malinga/Ajmal/McGrath are all extremely good, and Broad isn't exactly incompetent. It's a team that obviously doesn't take itself too seriously - much like the format it's playing.

ONIY gets a mention for the Waqar/Bond pairing (but does a NSW and plays too many bloody bowlers). The rest of you can bugger off - trying to get way too funky with batting orders.

Favourite Test XI:

Could go a number of ways here. Monk has an insane bowling line up and some mighty fine batters, but the likes of Engineer and Chappelli at the top let it down somewhat. Really rate kyear's top 5 and two main bowlers, but the support bowlers aren't quite as strong as whats found elsewhere and the batting dies away quickly down the order. Harsh has an insane batting line up, even if the openers let the team down somewhat, and the bowling attack is nicely balanced. Love Dan's bowling attack to bits; it has absolutely everything, but the batting isn't quite up to strength. When players like Trott are still available the inclusion of KW is inexcusable. Morgieb falls into the same boat, maybe even has a slightly stronger bowling up, but batting falls away quickly
Saint Kopite's team is just plain strong all round, except maybe the performance of its spinner away from the SC so i should really go with him, but even if Watson just gets his trademark 30s and Langer averages similarly the batting will still be the best on display so

Harsh.ag it will be, followed closely by Kopite and kyear.

Favourite ODI XI:

Watson hits the nail on the head here. Great openers, two of the best ODI bowlers ever, class in the middle order with finishing power later on so i'm going to have to give my vote to him. Blakus another one with a strong team, mixture of proven class and would have been great in the bowling line up, and lots of great aggressive batsmen, so gets third place. Kopite and kyear also with very strong teams, and Camos team has bucket loads of flair. 2nd place goes to Dan because the change in format turns his mediocre test line batting line up into a strong ODI one and his bowlers are even better in this format.

Favourite T20 XI:

Well Howe's team is the most proven in this format, but that doesn't necessarily make it the best. Think Dan's bowlers would be impossible to score off, 8 overs of Murali and Vettori, before one of the best ever exponents of the yorker in Vaas and the pace of Johnson comes in at the death. Add that to Tresco having probably the strongest domestic T20 record ever, AB and Morgan's ability to hit 6's of anything with some solid batting above means Dans team is the stand out in this format. Monks team is also great, can see them making huge totals with regularity to make up for the lack of quality bowling options. 3rd place goes to Camo, really well chosen bowlers for this format and all of the batsmen can dazzle.

Only 3 out of the original 14 drafters have bothered to vote so far. I guess that this is what happens when the person organising the draft is in abstentia for much of it.

Watson - better ODI line-up, IMO, and in that format it's close to the best. In Tests, Shakib seems over-placed at 6 and it lacks true elite bats.

Aldo Raine - Klusener ahead of Hill in Tests? WTF? Anyway, I love that middle-order, but the bowling seems a little lacking.

ONIY - can't fault it much. Would be very hard to beat in the short formats in particular.

Blakus - not sold on the Test bowling, personally. In the short formats though Lee, Dhoni and Saqlain spring to life and the presence of the slogger Jessop makes it really strong.

Howe - definitely drafted for the shortest format, and in that it's one of the only sides where the XI is proven. Probably the worst Test line-up though, and by quite a distance.

Saint Kopite - super side, but in Tests I don't like Yuvraj and it seems lacking in a fifth bowler. Up there in the short formats though.

Camo - not bad, not bad. Like the batting, but I think the bowling seems lacking. Interesting T20 lineup on paper, but it plays too many bowlers IMO.

Pothas - obviously it has the Bradman factor. Better short formats batting, but the bowling lacks experience in the short formats so it's hard to call.

Dan - not really a fan of his Test lineup, it seems to lack truly elite batsmen and a few meh players. The short formats are the strong point though. His non-Murali bowlers are better short format bowlers, and Trescothick and Morgan are better in the short format as well.

Harsh - better Test lineup, IMO, and in that format it might well be the best. Think a few of his bats are better long-format players.

Kyear - can't really fault this. Definitely up there in both Tests and ODI's.

Monk - given how he selected his line-up I find the side hard to judge. Good Test line-up, only real weakness is Engineer opening, but its short format quality is unknown. I'd like to think they'd go well, but yeah.

So Tests, I think Harsh wins, with Kyear and Monk getting honourable mentions.

ODI's, Watson with Blakus and Kopite getting honourable mentions (and Dan, Kyear and ONIY getting honourable honourable mentions)

T20's? ONIY with Dan and Howe getting honourable mentions.

I know this is out of place on my part, but this poll does not make any sense, with all due respect to Howe and his great idea. I think most of us picked our players to balance all 3 sides, and not to make a specialist team. I could have easily made an even better Test XI if I had tried, and the same is true for others too. The way to make a poll reflect the spirit in which the draft was played would be if we all voted on which squad of 12 players would be best suited to compete in a tour of 3/5 Tests, 5 ODIs and 3 T20s. Get a 1st, 2nd and 3rd voted on this factor. I might well come second in the current format, and quite far behind on the format I am championing, but still.
