The Best of Each Decade Birthday DRAFT

Thanks guys,

I know Bill Ponsford (1900) was best known as an opener but he played a bit in the middle order in tests and according to his profile 'He was second to none as a player of spin bowling, and O'Reilly reckoned him to be an even tougher opponent than Bradman to bowl at...'

Plus I've seen a fair bit of my cricket (and footy) sitting in his stand at the MCG so I'll stick him in my middle order somewhere.

Hobbs, Grace, .... Javed, Ponsford, ..... Benaud, Akram, ..... ..... B Johnston, .......
Bill Ponsford scored one of his 400s while batting at. No.5, so batting in the middle order doesn't seem a problem to him.

Already a strong bowling attack - I'm now wondering who will end up batting at No.8 ?!

**** both Fazal Mahmood and Arthur Morris gone from 1920s. Guess I will have to give up on that decade and pick Patsy Hendren from 1880s instead. Going quite tactical about filling up most difficult decades right now.

International Regular
Next up, the man immortalised in song by Half Man, Half Biscuit - Hedley Verity. Born at Headingley in 1905, he died of wounds sustained in action during the Second World War. Several Yorkshire-born members of the 1954-55 touring Ashes party, including captain Len Hutton, stopped off at Caserta en route to Australia, laying white roses on his grave.

both turned the ball the same way so no thanks
Facing-up to a leg-break googly bowler, and a 'fast' left-arm orthodox bowler, requires a different set of skills. Especially when Faulkner is bowling the googly.

It's like saying that batting against Warne and Underwood (for example) requires the same technique. Which I don't think is true.

Saint Kopite

First Class Debutant
This was by far the toughest round for me to pick a player. Was confused between two to three players but ultimately went with Lohmann.
