Is there any chance of David Warner being groomed for captaincy post-Clarke? I know it seems outlandish right now but I have a feeling he could be the natural successor to Clarke's aggressive style. There's something about the guy if you look past his more "rustic" sensibilities. He's obviously smart about his game, candid with the press; much like Sehwag in that sense though Sehwag didn't make a great captain for the little time he did it.
Smitteh, Warner to be VC and do a Warne.

Everyone thought Sehwag would make a gun captain though in terms of being a ballsy attacking captain. Just like one imagines Warner would do. But as it turned out with Sehwag, the reality of captaincy is not that simple. Other than attacking fields and generally attacking captaincy there are far more aspects to the role that Warner would just majorly suck at. He couldn't just mature "a little", he'd have to completely change who he is.

Warner is not all that different to Baz in his attitude IMO, far more like Baz than he is Sehwag.

Lol Quaggas. Great stuff
Yeah, not sure what the avatar is showing. It goes by a bit fast. I think it's the scoreboard just before us winning the WC, then a pic of panicked Oz players running about, and finally AB jumping for joy in Perth

Nah, it's becoming increasingly clear that everyone - within CA and outside CA - is viewing Smith as Clarke's natural successor.

Irrespective of the Clarke succession issue, this summer shows the benefit of a bit of stability in a side. It also shows there's something in the truism that a lot of blokes take up to twenty or so tests to settle at the top level. Blokes like Warner, TPC & Lyon look as though they think they at least belong at test level. Event he fact Australia could afford to give the ultimately failed Bailey experiment a five test run shows you the difference between being able to kick off a career in a settled side and one which is looking for instant success.

For this reason I think Australia should stick with Doolan for a little while at least. He has somethings to work on, for sure - he's been out pulling two or three times which can be pretty easily corrected if he works on it, and he must develop the ability to drop the ball and go so he rotates the strike. I think he at least deserves an opportunity to see if he can do this things and contribute consistently. Three is the spot in the order. One fer isn't always a big deal. Two fer nearly always is. Even when Australia was on top in the mid 90s, it took until Ponting established himself there for the order to truly settle after Boon's retirement. With a reasonably settled (in the short to medium term) 1, 2, 4-6 it gives whoever is slotted in at three a chance at least to be given a decent run at it.

Yeah, Doolan against spin, especially looks extremely uncomfortable
doesn't make decisive foot movements, it means he can play seam and swing pretty well because he plays it so late and he's always well balanced but its the worst way to go in the sub continent where the turn will be quicker than anything he's faced

This may well be the case, but with Warner, Watson, Clarke and Smith all a lock (Rogers given he's 36 is only ever two tests away from speculation) the hong is they can afford to give Doolan a chance to show what he can do. If we'd lost the ashes and then this series, you'd imagine there would be virtually no chance of him being retained ahead of the UAE tests after two lean outings vs SA.

Winning gives you the chance to sample things over a longer period (including beer), is what I'm saying.
