Should Dhoni still captain India?

State Vice-Captain
For ODIs, MSD is the correct person to lead the side, the only thing which is irritating is his biased selections which can be damaging in the long run. For tests, we need someone who is pro active and aggressive like Gambhir, Kohli is too immature and too self obsessed to be a captain. MSD doesn't even deserve to be in the test squad when we have Dinesh Karthik who is technically sound with the bat and an equally good keeper.

I don't disagree that the current mix of players for India is better than what the old guard would be if they were playing today - however that's not the comparison point. We're comparing the side and make up from when India were able to rise up the rankings and eventually claim number one, versus the India that is now there that seems destined to fall to mid table in the rankings.

As for Sharma, sorry but he's the only Indian bowler outside of Khan who has consistently managed to take wickets away from home and trouble good batsman. Shami looks highly promising but India don't have better seam options than Sharma at the moment in test cricket. Quite simple. Rahane has a couple of good performances but has hardly set the world on fire and you seem to think that Dhoni is the reason behind the squad being selected the way it is - doubtful, he'll have a lot to do with the playing 11 but not the squad selection.
Im sorry but everything in the second paragraph is unbelievably wrong.
Ishant has been the most staggeringly bad overseas bowler in the side apart from this NZ series. Hes been far worse than Zaheer, Praveen, Shami, Yadav in most overseas tours in the last 2-3 years.
Then we have promising bowlers like Dhawan, Pandey, Pankaj waiting in the wings and you say we have no one to replace him?
Rahane has done about as much as is humanly possible for a youngster on his first tour to SA, NZ against quality lineups.

Just so wrong

Saurav Ganguly makes a sly reference when discussing Tendulkar's captaincy:

"Sachin was a better captain than his results show and better than people make him out to be. He led on some very tough tours - South Africa, West Indies, Sri Lanka and Australia - and it must be said he didn't lose eight in a row. This when he didn't have a very good team around him. The older players were fading and the newcomers were too raw,"

India doesn't have anyone of note other than Kapil
Lol, stupid post. Kumble, Harbhajan, Srinath, Zaheer, Bedi, Chandrasekar, Prasanna are all comfortably more than just being 'of note'. Lets look at great Pak fast bowlers excluding drug cheats: Akram, Waqar, Imran, Fazal, Sarfaraz Nawaz. Say that you have just had the better fast bowlers and I would agree without hesitation. But this whole horse**** about your bowling over the years being better than our batting doesn't fly and its an absurd comparison anyway.

At least bother to read the post before spouting your **** you stupid ass wipe

I was commenting on Jono's post where he implied India's **** bowling and Pakistan's **** batting. I told him that historically Pakistan has had some very good players in its weaker discipline (and in reasonable quantity) unlike India in their weaker discipline. I wasn't comparing Indian batting to Pakistani bowling pull your head out of your ass.

Let's stop this right here please. Why did a thread about Dhoni's captaincy turn into a debate about India/Pak anyway? Back on topic please.

Smali's post has been addressed by the mods. You've had your say. Let's get back on topic now please.

Whatever it takes!!!
The problem about our team is deeper than just selection or captaincy IMO.. How the game has progressed today, players need to bring more than just their primary skills to the party. And if you look at our line up, no matter what XI we end up picking, we will always fall short in some area or the other. And it is not just short of international class, it is just short of class, period. Look at the guys:

Ashwin - Decent to Good batsman in tests, **** athlete, decent catcher groomed as a long term 1st slip, good bowler at home, **** abroad.
Jadeja - Excellent fielder, Very limited batsman, Limited bowler, Brings great energy to the team and can galvanize the team with his athleticism when the going gets tough.
Ojha - Excellent bowler, **** at everything else.
Mishra - Decent batsman, Good bowler, **** athlete/fielder, No Ball issues.
Harbhajan - A lesser version of Ashwin as of date without the catching upside.

And I can go on and on about the batting options and fast bowling options in a similar vein.

The reality is, no matter what XI India pick, we will still fall short of international quality as a team at some disciplines.. It is the harsh truth and hence we just have to prepared to be **** abroad for a little while yet until someone better comes along.

Well yeah, I realise that there's a massive gap in the fielding abilities between someone like Southee and someone like Ojha, but you'd have to be hoping that as a bowler you'd be selected on your primary skill.

While having a good catcher at fine leg is great, there are enough good slip fielders and close in fielders amongst the batsmen that it needn't be that much of an issue. Kohli, Rahane, Dhawan are all excellent fielders, and Pujara looks very capable in the slips. Shami also doesn't look an awful outfielder.

Also, Zaheer Khan and Ishant Sharma are just as bad in their secondary skills as Ojha and Mishra.

But you can say this for just about any team these days. They will fall short in some aspect.

Agree on all that. But it comes down to combinations, doesn't it? For instance, if we had picked Ojha as our spinner for NZ, we would have had to play all 3 of Zak, Ishant and Ojha who bring nothing at all to the table apart from their bowling. Our entire fielding combination outside the circle will go haywire.. You can always carry 1 or 2 passengers on the field and in the tailend batting but 3 would be too many for any international side today, esp. away from home where most teams' batting line up struggle anyways.
