Doubt that tbh. What world class player is going to want to go to us? Not than many will want to now as it is, but I suspect that even less would want to go to us sans-Rooney. The sign of intent is less to do with Rooney than it is to do with the fact that we are willing to spend £300k a week on a player.

Besides if no world class players want to go to us either way, we are better off with Rooney than without. The only way that letting Rooney go can be best is if we can still sign more than one world class player once he's gone, which I really can't see happening. I can't see why any established player would want to forego CL football for us at the moment.

TBH I think I was probably wrong saying he should go for another established star, after all you've got RVP, Mata and umm Fellaini.

Well, what a good manager with contacts in World football should be doing is trying to pick up a couple of World-class talents that aren't with big teams. I'm not going to name names because I don't know enough about World Football. Yet unfortunately for United this re-signing of Rooney rather makes you wonder if Moyes knows much outside this country.

Just feel that the money could be used better and more imaginatively.

Offer a world class player that much money and most of them would come, look at Monaco, sure they can offer Champions League football in the future but so should Man Utd be able to do that as well.

Get rid of Moyes in the summer and invest that money elsewhere. Rooney staying is not a problem but I refuse to believe they needed to offer him that much money.

I think a good manager that understood the world market could build a better team by letting Rooney go but since Moyes is crap it's probably best if he keeps players like him around. Halsey's case is pretty much right but I think Fergie would have told him to **** off anyway.

What's absurd is that it's a five and a half year deal. He's been declining for years, has a game that relies on physicality and a sub-par lifestyle. In five years time we'll still be paying him 350k a week and at that stage there's a good chance he'll barely even be a footballer.

Taken in isolation, it's not a horrible deal for MU as Rooney's salary is roughly 80 million quid over 5 years and any sale/replacement is likely to cost at least as much (e.g. sell Rooney for 20, purchase someone else for 50 and pay them 200 k + per week = roughly 80).

Biggest issue is what it does to their wage structure as I expect any retained player/prospect to bend them over from now on

Yeah better than last year for sure. His all-round game is better than the year before but he's scoring fewer goals.

It's not as big an improvement as advertised, though. His reputation is still lagging behind his current ability. It's a long list of players that should be paid more than him.

Realistically with three teams advancing (to a play off at least) even if we'd got worst case scenario (maybe Belgium, Serbia, Montenegro, Iceland & Kazakhstan?) we'd probably squeak through.
