Maybe I'm just an incredible pessimist, but I would't rule United out of the CL race until their out of this years comp. Been rank in the league but it was only a couple of years ago that 6th placed Chelsea won the tournament, United have looked good in Europe this season and their round of 16 tie is very much winnable.

Would we really back them to beat any of the likely winners of this round's games let alone three of them? Best case scenario is Milan somehow overcoming Atletico but I just don't see it.

We played alright in the group stages. Highly unlikely but more chance of that than finishing fourth.

Yeah us winning the CL is way more likely than us finishing fourth. We're a miles better side than when Liverpool were when they won it. Granted we're also up against better opposition but we're not up against better opposition than Chelsea were when they came 6th and won it. It's a knockout competition, the best side in Europe is way less likely to win the CL than the best side in a given country is to win that country's league. All you really need to win it once you hit the knockout phase is a couple of upsets, which isn't out of the question for anyone.

With that said I think we're far less likely to beat Olympiakos than most people do and it really wouldn't surprise me if we went out. They're a good side.

They've also just sold their best player to Fulham.

Have no idea how good Olympiakos are and I doubt many of us do but given the sort of sides United have lost to this year you would not put it past them losing. I know there is the Chelsea example but I refuse to believe that United have a hope in hell of winning the Champions league.

Yeah, same here.

Shush you two, let us dream. Winning the CL and knocking Liverpool out of next season's competition in the process would challenge John Terry falling on his arse to cost Chelsea the trophy as "best thing ever to happen".

I must say, the amount of dismay that would cause Liverpool/Spurs fans if you were to pip either of them to a CL place would be truly glorious. But that said, Man Utd missing out on a CL place would be just a bit more glorious.

Haha, and who says Arsenal won't be 4th?

Bookies have Liverpool as shorter odds than Arsenal now. 9-1 for Arsenal good value really. No reason why they can't come good again.

Yeah Liverpool are still vulnerable away from home, I mean they almost didn't beat Fulham.

I really hope Aresenal can come back into some form but you worry it is going to come down to Chelsea or City, which is a shame because that is likely to be the case for the next 3 or 4 years. Still fancy City to win it, their first team is definetly the best, The key players need to stay fit though of course.

Arsenal's return to form will be dependent on them picking one of Podolski/Gnabry/Ox-Chamberlain in the majority of their Prem fixtures, and playing them in a wide role, I think.

Rosicky should only play centrally for mine, hasn't got the legs to get up and down the flanks repeatedly over 90 mins.

Lack of pace/directness probably the main contributing factor as to why they never looked threatening last night I'd say. Even on the counter attack they looked sluggish.
