One good thing about the channel 9 commentary is that when they bring up something that happened in the recent series they show the highlights. They really should have shown Amla highlights there, at least the werid dismissals.

imagine if doolan and marsh can make the step up, with them, smith and clarke we'll see some gorgeous shots over the next few years

I feel like Philander hasn't bowled much.
Hiding when the going tough as usual

But yeah I've felt that way too, even though he hasn't bowled far fewer overs than the others. Most of those overs were in the first session though, right. After that he's been used extremely rarely

Objectively, it doesn't get much better than a hundred against Steyn/Philander/Morkel/McLaren on a greenish pitch in SA. Top knock.

I think that's probably the best way to use him though. He's so much better with the new ball than the old ball, so you'd look to get as many overs as possible out of him early on and then give him a break.

Such weird selection to have 4 bowlers and Peterson and then have Duminy bowl. Just play a bat for Peterson then.

Also Smith bowling Duminy with Marsh in the 90s was a poo move.
His bowling changes have been fairly **** overall tbh. Bowling innocuous spin in the first session and early in the Smith/Marsh partnership felt like a really poor move unless he genuinely had no other options. Given that there's four seamers, seems hard to believe unless there's something we don't know about fitness. And bowling Philander now when the new ball is coming up soon instead of one of the others.

To be fair though the pace attack has seemed fairly flat in general. Steyn obviously isn't at his best but Philander has been unimpressive as well. New ball did a bit but since then it really hasn't seemed like batting has been that difficult. Will be interesting to see how the pitch plays when Australia bowl. And I guess with the second new ball tonight.
