Days of Grace

International Captain
Why is it that 2 days out from every home test we play, one of the newspapers runs an article commenting on how green the pitch looks, usually with an accompanying photo, only for it to become an absolute road by drinks in the first session.

Rain will probably only delay play for 30min today. I would bowl first solely based on overhead conditions
if there's rain as soon as the ball gets on the wet outfield there'll be no swing for Southee and Boult.

Also, it swings even in beautiful clear conditions in Auckland. There'll be swing whatever the weather, but if the ball gets wet we're ****ed.

Usually you need just a little bit of cloud cover. Last year every time a cloud rolled over things spiced up, or that was my impression from the stand.

I accept your point about the ball getting wet, though I just have in the back of my mind how easy it was to bat on the last day, I don't feel like sitting through the agony of that again, but that is probably my emotions getting in the way of reason

Sitting up in my Auckland hotel room, this is most definitely a big advantage to the side who wins the toss and bowls first, humid overhead conditions, the ball will move around a lot this morning.

Elements of this is true, I actually find that on the clear sunny days, you need a good amount of breeze to get the ball moving. If you don't have the breeze then the ball tends to go a little later and not as much.

On a day like this though, the thing will bend like a banana if you're an out and out swing bowler.

What are you doing in a hotel room in Auckland? Get to the game!
