Non-contest really for No.3 - Ricky Ponting

Quite like Michael's team with Steve Waugh at No.6, because while turning up pissed to a big game obviously helpled Doug and Rodney, I'm not sure that it worked particularly well for Symonds.

Ricky Ponting for this spot.

Maybe I have to go and check some stats, but for mine, Mark Waugh has it all over Watson. I remember plenty of matches where Mark Waugh was the winning factor with the ball. He could do anything. (Goes off and checks stats)

Big Deal! So watson has better bowling stats. That is because he has played in an era of Aussie crapness and got to bowl because no one else could do a job. Mark Waugh was Mr Reliable. Mark Waugh played in a team when they didn't need his bowling, but I recall him pulling out the efforts when the bowling stars were having an off day. Mark Waugh was like Symonds in that he made things happen with the ball when he came on. Waugh was worth a wicket per match in his fielding. That trumps Watson. Stats don't tell the story. Watto is Twatto! Watson's batting is crap. Sure he can hit sixes but you are comparing modern bats and boundaries rather than players. Waugh would have hit sixes along the ground with modern bats.

Watson's mere 9 hundreds to Waugh's 18 says it all when we are talking about a batting position.

He's saying he's a better batsman than Watson, which he obviously was imo, a very useful bowler and a massive asset in the field.
Waugh was definitely about as good a part timer as you can get. Got Sachin out stumped when he was at the very peak of his powers in a world cup game... Epic dismissal, even though it made me cry

Was mostly just surprised that he spent the whole time arguing against stats and then brought out some that suit tbh. But FWIW I agree that Waugh is a better batsman, but that's not the reason for going Watson.

Anywho I guess it's beside the point now. Ponting for this obvs.

Deano had the better average in ODIs and List As and faced arguably faced better bowlers + definitely more favourable bowling conditions. I know the easy solution is to pick Ricky at 3 & Jones at 4, but if you could only pick one of them?

Probably Poontangs huge WC final innings in 03 that puts him above Jones for me, but f-all in it. The point is you don't have to pick one. They are both must haves for me. Who comes in first doesn't matter too much. Same as when we get to Huss v Bevo, I'd bat Hussey before Bevan, but wouldn't lose any sleep over it. They both have to be in the side though.

Dean Jones and Michael Bevan are certainties but I'm still unsure of my preferred combination of Hussey, Symonds and Watson to fulfill the next two spots. Mussey poor World Cup performances is an issue so that leaves me with:

Seeing as Gilly is at opener what are we looking at for 7? I would have thought that would be where you'd be looking at guys like Watson and Symonds. For instance from my original picks with Haydos out and Gilly opening it would be Deano, Mussey, Bevo and Roy.

With the openers selected I can't see how an all rounder could take a top six spot off Mr Cricket. He has the 10th highest average in ODI's (>500 runs qual) and you'd just overload the bowling.

Hoping to leave the selections fairly flexible if possible. Obviously an ODI team needs a keeper and 5 competent bowlers. I'm keen on teams having a spinner in that mix

7 can be a flexible spot in this team seeing as Gilly is opening and we may already have a decent bowler in the top 6, so I'll probably leave that til last so people can decide if they want someone like Hussey or an extra bowling option.

There is no rule that says Symonds or Hussey can't bat at No.7. It means that line-up bats deep, that's all.

If you want to put more of a bowling allrounder at No.7 then you are making the assumption that two the part-timers, M.Waugh and Symonds or S.Waugh aren't good enough to bowl 10 overs between them. I think that they are good enough, but I can understand why someone might think the opposite.
