I know I know, I thought it was unlikely he'd play another test months ago too, but I allowed a skerrick of hope to sneak in after he got through a couple of domestic FC games unharmed. Plus it would just be extremely convenient for our test selectors if Vettori could slot in for Sodhi against India.

agreed, which is why I think it was encouraging that Hesson was asking for greentops, even if they might not be the best way to win

Interesting one, given a lot of us (perhaps not you) didn't think he was pulling his weight as a Test player pre-injury. He's probably not going to offer an average of 25+ now, with less time at the crease of late, and I doubt he's a wicket taker especially v India. Better off playing Kane as main spinner, picking an extra batsman (Jesse) and trying to beat them through scoreboard pressure - as we almost did in Napier 09, *insert Indian city here where Harbhajan broke our hearts* etc.

Sony replaces Neo as broadcaster for India-NZ series - Hindustan Times

SonySix sports and entertainment channel has replaced Neo Sports Broadcast Pvt Ltd as the official broadcaster of the cricket series between New Zealand and India that is scheduled to begin from January 19. Sony is estimated to have offered $50-60 million for the contract. The 30-day tour starts with five One-Day Internationals followed by two Tests. Originally, the rights for this series were part of a seven-year contract, signed last year by Neo Sports with the New Zealand Cricket Board, estimated to be around $60-70 million. The agreement gave Neo Sports exclusive broadcast rights across Asia, excluding West Asia, for both domestic and international cricket tournaments to be played in New Zealand till 2020.

New Zealand Cricket Board is said to have has annulled the contract with Neo Sports, alleging non-payment of the first instalment that was agreed upon in February last year. The board did not respond to queries from HT . However, a senior Neo Sports executive said on condition of anonymity that the deal was called off after the New Zealand board failed to submit details of events and those related to the sharing of associated advertising revenues that were agreed upon. It is, however, still not clear whether the cancellation involves broadcast rights only for this series or the whole contract of seven years.

“With SonySix as partners for the series, we are assured to reach out to the fans in the best manner,” David White, CEO, New Zealand Cricket Board, said in a statement.

The amount of pirated NZ domestic cricket videos that were reaching India via Plunket Promise were probably also a concern for those Neo guys. We know what happened there.

Re: Vettori, it's kinda ironic that he's going to step away from Tests now given the bowling attack is actually quite strong (or would be stronger with him in it). Most of his career he hasn't had a great deal of quality at the other end, so the spotlight has often fallen on him to take wickets and thus we've become to expect much of him and he hasn't delivered as much as we've wanted (indeed, a few members of this board have been highly critical of his record and were calling for his axing for years  ). And then we came to rely on him with the bat as well...
Now would actually be the perfect time for him to play as a specialist spinner, batting at 8, with superb back up from Southee and Boult. It would lessen the role of our third seamer, in terms of if they don't fire, and create even more opportunities if we had trademark Vettori being tight and creating pressure, which in the past wasn't taken advantage of by our carousel of seamers. That said, he's played a few matches with Southee, Boult, Bracewell et al but Southee and Boult weren't as gun as they are now. I'd be interested to see how he'd bowl with the current versions.

When he's played amongst a decent attack:
With Cairns, Doull
With Martin and Bond
Martin, Bond and Franklin

^ Good point. A typical Vettori test spell of 40 overs, 3- 97 would be ideal as the stock bowler with our other resources.

absolutely. I think it's over though.

Ever since we had a decent - well, let's be fair - top class new ball partnership, the value of Vettori skyrockets. He was never exactly a weak link either and I don't get why people seem to think so. But Vettori with this attack would be superb.

With the greatest respect, the last time Dan took 3-97 + was in early 2011 v Pakistan (not counting Zim). That's 3 years ago now. Not typical of his age, current physical state, recent playing history etc.

General opinion on Vettori is very divided isn't it. It will be interesting when he does "officially" retire, how people will look back on his career.

I'd love for him to return for the 2015 WC, but the chances of that happening appear to be becoming less and less.

Random comments on Dan with no connection between them

1) SA and Hashim Amla in particular seemed to toy with Vettori - I concluded during that series that he was finished.
2) I got my hopes up with his FC fivefer earlier this season.
3) I don't fully understand his decision to go and focus on the IPL with a world cup just around the corner.

Heh yeah. What was the anecdote from some Cricket Show quiz with the players once, Vettori spent an hour sitting in his car honking its horn maniacally after his first IPL auction.

Yep, it was in Napier after an ODI - not sure about his car but Vettori and McCullum were up and about after they got drafted for mega bucks. Then Scott 'Definitely an I in' Styris got less than he wanted, and everyone had to calm down and feel sorry for him.

i dont think that india will do well on the seaming wickets that they will face in New Zealand, its not an easy place to bat...

Taylor must be the next Bradman, then.

Let me guess, the last test series you watched in NZ was India 2002/03?
