Kallis retires from Tests

A great cricketer, the likes of whom we will never see again. As other Indian posters mentioned, he never seems to get out against us. Screwed us over in the third test last tour when we so near victory.

SA are going to struggle to replace him as a bowler. Having him as a 5th bowler is such a huge bonus for their team.

Some of the posting here just seems bitter. He averaged 56 for God's sake and was such an important cog in the awesome SA bowling machines over time. Any team would be lucky to have such a player, yes even the ones from the 80s.

A bloke averaging 35 with the bat is only getting into a pretty average team. He doesn't meet your daft standard of getting in with either aspects, so according to you isn't an all rounder.

He would have got in Englands side comfortably, but we weren't very good then, anyway it's a silly way of rating an all-rounder IMHO. Kallis or Sobers not all-rounders but Rafique was.

Kallis is a great player.

By my estimation, the 5th best batsman of his time, and a very decent seam bowler, and great slipper.

Kudos the man!

Clearly he would make most teams easily. But the arguments against him (selfish, not ATG) deal with placing him in the most elite of categories. No one to my knowledge is saying that he wasn't any good. Or even that he wasn't excellent.

Pfft if He was Indian he'd have been the greatest pace-bowler in your history.

I do not like people not part of the dressing room branding players selfish. The arguments I have seen against him here are he wouldn't get in to the team purely as a bowler. But that same argument works against the other ATG all rounders too.

Jacques Kallis once played a test series against Pakistan, where he had more runs, wickets and catches than the whole Pakistan team put together.

He is cricket, and that's why it's called Kallisball.
Did this actually happen?

Anyone who thinks Kallis is the greatest allrounder ever knows nothing.

That's just a fact
I don't but I wouldn't begrudge someone who thinks he is. Who would you say is the greatest all rounder ever, and on what basis?

Kallis would walk in to any test team in cricket's history, and probably be 1st 2nd or 3rd selected in any of them

I think that's true. I was thinking more all time teams but if you mean actual teams in history, I can't think of one he wouldn't make.

Botham in the first half of his career. Imran for what he evolved into.

As far as allrounders go, i rate the guy who averages 35 with bat and takes 4 wickets per test +, than the guy who averages 55 and takes less than 2.

Sobers is interesting. I just wish he'd bowled seam and nothing else, as I suspect he'd have been even better.

One of my favourite players ever. An astounding batsman to watch (I really don't get people who say otherwise) and a very skilled bowler. Just a superb cricketer really.

.
Why? One wins game with the bat and contributes with the ball, the other wins games with the ball and contributes with the bat. What makes one so obviously superior to the other?
