For the last time.

They. Didn't. Need. To. Hit. Out

A couple of singles and twos and target us down to single digits. Guess who's panicking big time then? Our bowlers wudve probably **** themselves in that situation. Ishant and co are just immaculate in those pressure cooker situations aren't they?

Can't believe people actually believe SA did the right thing. You had to have seen the match live to understand why it was the wrong decision

Sachin's 136 was on the fourth day with a draw nowhere near the realms of possibility so that's not a good comparison at all

Sachin 136 I will respect far more than what happened in this test. I am sure you will agree :) So, heartbreak. That's what makes the sport great. Giving up adds nothing to the sport.
No I won't. As much as I love that 136 (one of Sachin's finest if not his finest innings) I do penalize it VERY heavily for being in a losing cause. To be fair to Sachin there weren't only 3 overs left after he got out and there were a lot many overs for the tail to face which wasn't the case in this match. There were only 3 overs left here and a call had to be made. Fight, win and take the initiative. Fight, lose and not have a shot at winning the series. Retreat and come back to fight another day to win the series for which you are favorites. SA chose the last one and will be vindicated if they win the series.

Why did I know people would say that?

We go into Durban even Stevens atleast. What pisses me off is that if SA win in Durban, people will turn around and say "See, the tactics were right, they won the series " . **** that. Why the **** wouldn't you want to win NOW when things are obviously in your favour?

From what I gather, we have very different risk preferences - risk averse (you) vs risk neutral (me), since in this case, the odds were in favor of SA.

BECAUSE SA's main objective MIGHT ACTUALLY BE WINNING THE SERIES.
Yes, AND IF THEY HAD WON HERE, IT PRETTY MUCH KILLS INDIA FOR THE SERIES , DOESN'T IT?
I can do caps as well :p
Who says you have to win the series in the last match? They win this and all they have to do is avoid defeat at Durban

Yes, but they had a decent chance to lose as well.

Nope.
And there ends my valiant effort to in this epic battle of a debate. I got close and there are only one or two posters agreeing with the opposing view. But what happens if I hit my head on the wash basin, go daft permanently and peter schiff, the great debater signs up on CW, and somehow manages to prove that SA did the right thing. So even though I'm confident I hold all the ces, I'm going to piss myself in fear and call this debate a draw.

I'll beat you next time though

It's a lottery when you're bowling to tailenders though. Didn't Ishant grab a few wickets in that Champions Trophy final after being belted all over the park?

You guys should just give it a break. There are always going to be two kind of approaches. Some go all out for glory, some take a safety first approach. Why is each group trying to convert the other? Not going to happen.

Come now, what's the forum for if not to discuss stuff like this? No one's trying to convert anyone, just trying to understand what the other side's logic is.

**** fence-sitters like you tbh

I'm torn on the outcome. On one hand I'm happy they didn't lose, on the other it was torturous to have them come within 8 runs of the win. However, I understand the decision to shut it down as a former poker player. Sometimes betting everything on the chance that the last card will win the hand for you isn't worth it.

So I'd rate the draw as frustrating, but understandable.

Fantastic fightback by South Africa to save the test.
That South African fourth innings will go down in cricketing history as one of the greatest fightbacks ever.
Thank god they had the common sense to shut up shop when the 7th wicket Du Plessis, our last recognised batsman, fell.
If we had lost another wicket we would have lost the test.

  4. South Africa vs England, August 1947 (The Oval)
