McCullum hinting Sodhi will play regardless of Vettori...

Cricket: Core players progressing well - Cricket - NZ Herald News
I'll be wild if McCullum seriously implied that. Sodhi is a long way off international standard for mine and will likely get eaten alive by the Indian batsmen, especially considering how much he struggled against sub-par Windies batsmen. If Vettori is fit and available for the Indian tests, it would be utter madness to play Sodhi ahead of him.

Just a small observation having watched a replay of some of the fourth day of the third test again. The commentators got stuck into Samuels for getting out to a poke at a ball wide of off stump from Anderson. It was a poor shot, and Samuels is clearly struggling with form, but Anderson really deserves credit for that dismissal. He really worked Samuels over with balls that came into the batsman, and followed it up with the dismissal ball that moved away from him. I could really see why Samuels felt he had to play it. One of the commentators made a "golden arm" call on Anderson after that, but that dismissal was not a fluke. The guy is really starting to impress me.

Nah it was I think, the ball was released for the inswinger again, just got a great wobble and kick left on impact -

and Rutherford only 37 omg drop
Context is very important in cricket. That's the same logic that Darren Sammy supporters use to try and keep him as captain. 'We won 6 tests ion a row' etc etc. They try and hide the fact those tests were at home to Bangladesh, Zimbabwe and New Zealand in spin friendly conditions.

As far as Rutherford is concerned, the fact is he struggled against the worst West Indies attack in modern cricket history.I severely doubt we will ever field an attack that bad again, and I really don't feel that is an exaggeration. The not out at the end boosted that average significantly and that was one of the luckiest 40 odd not outs I have ever seen, Narine had him in all sorts of trouble. Throughout the series he got out in stupid ways like caught at long on, looked awful against spin and really struggled to score runs on the leg side when the pacers bowled into his hip. He constantly hits on the up through the off-side regardless of conditions. Against Tino it was ok because he doesn't move the ball, but even then he was dropped in the slips a couple of times. Roach moving the ball across him at pace would have got him out regularly IMHO and I reckon Shami might well do the same.

Dropping him now might be unfair, but if he continues like this in the India series he should surely be dropped.

On the flipside, he dominated the best English attack in modern history so make of that what you will. He's out of form with a very all-or-nothing technique which amplifies the problem as it did with Sehwag because he's got no plan B. It was good seeing him graft in the last innings though.

Yeah but that's natural variation isn't it? He was still putting the ball in the right area time and time again. It was a very, very tight spell.

He's played quite a lot of cricket since that one excellent innings lets face it. Trouble is he is quite poor against good spin bowling, whereas Sehwag was a destroyer of spin. Again, I think he deserves the India series to regain some form but if he doesn't show significant improvement he should be dropped.

I'm with Beamer on this one in not rating Rutherford. But from a selectorial consistency point of view, he gets at least the first test against India.

re: his 171, I wouldn't say that the attack was bowling particularly well to him on that day. And yes, the pitch was flat. Still though, can't take those runs away from him, he cashed in well. I'm not writing of Taylor's innings this series so I have to give credit to Rutherford when he plays well too.

Samuels is now out of the ODI series, he needs an operation on his wrist. The selectors in their wisdom have chosen Chadwick Walton, the back up keeper, to replace him. Our ODI squad now has 3 wicket keeper batsmen in it! Madness!

This injury crisis is getting a tad ridiculous. We've got some serious Limited Overs talent missing from this squad now in Gayle, Pollard, Samuels and Roach. That's almost the core of our side right there and the two biggest hitters in World Cricket. If we compete in this series it will be quite an achievement. Narine and Rampaul are going to have to do some serious damage to keep us in it. What on earth is our lineup going to be? Incredibly second string battingwise anyway. I guess:

Kieron Powell
Johnson Charles (wk)
Kirk Edwards
Darren Bravo
Lendl Simmons
Narsingh Deonarine
Dwayne Bravo (c)
Darren Sammy
Sunil Narine
Ravi Rampaul
Jason Holder

What became so obviously damaging about the Sammy situation during that time, despite the wins, was that his bowling regressed to the point that he wasn't even being selected as a bowler anymore. He was never going to be able to hold his spot as a batting allrounder so he really had no spot in the team at all. The #6 batsman was left out not because Sammy was going to play more of a batting role, but because Sammy had been marginalised into literally a nothing player through his own decline, and the specialist #6 batsman is the most dispensable player on a cricket side. They were no longer balancing a side containing Sammy, but in fact pretty much just pretending he didn't exist in the side and then selecting the best ten-man cricket team they could.
