***Official*** West Indies in New Zealand 2013/14

My other thought was that if Vettori isn't available, then I'd be willing to go in with four seamers and letting Kane wheel a few down.

If Vettori can't play, then I don't want to pick a spinner for the sake of it against India.

Opener
Opener
Williamson
Taylor
Ryder
McCullum
Anderson
Watling (wk)
Southee
Boult
Third seamer

I don't really understand the concern about Anderson and Watling batting too low. Isn't Watling scoring 30* and running out of partners better than Southee coming in at no.8 slogging 15?

Cairns and Parore were the no.7 and no.8 in one of New Zealand's more successful test teams.

and finally, the other option, which is particularly attractive if Vettori isn't fit (or even if he is) is to play 4 seamers so that Anderson's bowling is not a factor. That makes dropping him far easier.

If we're picking a 4th seamer in a 4 man bowling attack it shouldn't be Anderson.

It could possibly Neesham but I'd prefer it be an out and out seamer.

Thing is, you're struggling enough actually finding three seamers as it is.

There's no easy way to justify dropping a guy that's averaging 37 with the bat, and 19 with the ball after five test matches. I know a significant portion of the NZ public have no idea what's going on with our team, but anyone who has watched the last series or two knows Anderson's more than earned himself a spot in this team. It'd be a lot easier to convince people that McCullum's a better batsman than one of Rutherford/Fulton.

Yeah, I certainly wouldn't hate us dropping the spinner for the batsman and would prefer it to leaving Ryder out of the team entirely. But the best way to get Ryder in the team is by moving Baz.

Disagree with Hendrix's post.

If you're going to play 4 seamers, one of them has to be an allrounder IMO.

I agree but people care more about saving face than making properly justified selections.

It would be easy for them to say "We're worried about Corey's work load after the ODIs and we want to ease him into his test career" or some other bull****.

Fair enough to a point. It works because Southee and Sodhi can both hold a bat and potentially average 20-25 each.

You dare not pick four seamers who might all finish with career batting averages under 20. It just has the potential of 6-out, all out very quickly.

Anyway, Sodhi is no longer, or should no longer be in short-term plans.

it's nice for your number 8 to be able to bat, sure, but when you're picking 4 bowlers, whether it's 4 spinners or 4 seamers or some combination thereof, you don't need the 4th one to be an allrounder - at least not in the sense that Anderson's an allrounder. A couple of them to have an average in the late teens is all that's required.

Obviously with 5 you need an allrounder.

But you're not going to drop Anderson after this series for a fourth seamer who bats below no.7, are you? That would be silly.

no, the 4th seamer takes the spinner's spot.

But yeah, as PEWs pointed out, with Wagner still underperforming we're struggling to nail in 3 seamers, yet along 4.

Anderson is not droppable.
They will play a spinner.
They will play 3 frontline seamers
95% given baz will bat at 5

Ryder has a slim chance of playing unless he tons up on TV in the ODIs and puts public pressure on baz to open.

Rutherford will be the one to go despite his fortitude in today's inning.

I actually think there's more chance of Ryder opening than McCullum, especially since he'll be opening in the one dayers. I don't think it'd be a very good idea at all but I could see him coming in with hype about being the next Sehwag, being such a good foil for Fulton etc.
