As captain it's indisputably over. His place in the 11 should also be under question, though I don;t mind him staying in the squad.
Serious question - who else could captain this side? It feels like only Chanderpaul, Bravo and Roach are guaranteed a place in the side and none of them strike me as captaincy material.

I would say that Roach and Rampaul are certainly the first choice seamers but have either Holder or Cummins even played a test? You can't just completely drop your whole pace attack at once.

Also, I'd like to point out that his bowling average is better than NZ's third seamer Neil Wagner.
They haven't played a test yet but it is obvious to everyone apart from the selectors that they are better options. Heck anyone who moves the ball at more than 75mph would be a better option right now let's face it. You watch Holder in the ODI series and tell me if Gabriel and Best are better options in these conditions.

As for your side, well the domestic season is going to be hugely important as there will be a fallout from this test series. I would have:

Brathwaite
Powell (agreed - on very thin ice)
Edwards
Bravo
Chanderpaul
Gayle
Ramdin (c)
Holder (Sammy on occasion if you're worried about the batting lineup and it's a green seamer)
Rampaul
Narine
Roach

Not the greatest batting lineup admittedly but it's got a very experienced and talented 4/5/6 combination. The bowling lineup is very good. Pace and movement of Roach, swing and seam of Rampaul, bounce and accuracy of Holder and the mystery spin of Narine. That is an okish side, certainly at least twice as good as the one playing in this series.

So in the last 3 years, a period in which we've been indisputably poor in the opening department, Rutherford's average of 31, as the second best batsman in this shoddy era, earns him leniency?

No. Hell no. Guptill and Flynn were dropped for similar mediocrity and he's had plenty of chances.

Fulton's been far better and dropping him wouldn't be justifiable.
If you remember how long we've been looking for decent openers, and how bad combinations have been in the past, I don't think we should take for granted actually how decent the Fulton-Rutherford partnership has been. Their ****ty modes of dismissals and general lack of huge opening stands have overshadowed the fact they've done a better job than anyone else really in the last few years. While I concede Rutherford may need to be dropped I also think due to the fact he's young, he can be worked on and turned into a successful opener. I think the season should be played out domestically and internationally. If at the end of the India series Rutherford hasn't got it together than the best opener from the PS should replace him in the following series.

But no West Indian poster on here wants him in the side either!!
nah WW and Beamer have (perhaps a touch begrudgingly) supported him. He's also undoubtedly the best keeper batsman in the Caribbean and not under threat from anyone.

I wouldn't want him to captain though. He's been good this test but when it's not going well for him his body language is horrible and he gets lazy and looks completely uninterested in the game.

hendrix is spot on. Has to be Ramdin. He was one of our best ever Under 19 captains. He's averaged over 45 with the bat in the last 18 months so his place is secured. It's a no brainer.

Coach Gibson has to go. The only bowler who has massively improved under his stewardship is Rampaul His only real achievement was winning the T20 World Cup which given we have Narine plus a number of freakishly big hitters in our side isn't that much of a big deal. Otherwise he has totally screwed over one of our best batsman by publicly denigrating him (Sarwan) and has managed to rub all of our senior players up the wrong way (Sarwan, Shiv and Gayle have all publicly criticised him for his management and public comments in the past).

Finally, and actually most importantly IMHO, the selectors must go. I have never come across a more incompetent bunch, their positions are untenable and it's time for change (even Cozier was gobsmacked at this test squad, which says it all).

Yeah that's fair enough.

Honestly I would just give him the first India test with another opener in the squad putting pressure on him. Bring in the new guy if he fails.

Rutherford is averaging about 24 since his debut innings over 10 tests ago. That's a pretty decent run - if someone else starts scoring big runs in first class cricket I don't think anyone could complain if Rutherford was replaced.
I agree; but I don't believe in a wholesale change. Fulton doesn't deserve to be dropped but I think Rutherford should be given the next series, or at least the first Test, to make a century. Mind you, if he gets out first thing tomorrow his position may become untenable.

Not Terrible
I'd drop Rutherford for Guptill at the moment.

I really think any combination of Guptill/Flynn/Latham/Fulton/Rutherford is preeeetttty much going to do the same job. I like Guptill in the team because he offers the most beyond his batting in his fielding and his work ethic is incredible.

Good day. Boult set them up, Southee knocked them down. Anderson and Wagner were also not terrible. Good times.

Bring back Sarwan.
Gibson's biggest crime IMHO. We cannot afford to throw away test class batsmen just because they are slightly complicated characters. A coach at test level should be a decent man manager who can get the best out of his most talented players. If you can't, you shouldn't be in the job. Gibson out!

really feel your pain on this one. Knowing there are quality batsmen that are fit but not in the team hurts the most.

Our openers have a perfect chance to silence the critics tomorrow, with a small total to chase and no time pressure whatsoever.

Bloody hell, West Indies. I watched the collapse from 6 down to all out at the club rooms, and yeah, some decent bowling to tail enders. Then I saw the top order dismissals... Well, injudicious shot selection the order of the day it seems. Not the way to win a test. Still in with a chance, but another 100 and they would have been favourites.
