he was leaving reasonably well, i think the ball before played on his mind just a bit where it almost hit the stumps so he felt he should play this one.

Also I don't think anyone can blame Dhawan for that, it was masterful bowling. An inducker that nearly takes out the offstump, which would play on any batsman's mind, followed up by one that nips away pitching in almost the same place. Superb.
