When batsmen try that in OD cricket he just starts bowling a middle and off line and picks up bowled/lbw dismissals. At the end of the day you have to pick him or find a way of playing him off the pitch or you'll get out.
Yeah, but actively trying to score leaves you more vulnerable to that type of dismissal than if you're watching, defending and waiting to pick off the bad ball AFAIC. As I've said before, spinners of his ilk don't have the setup to beat people in the air; being hard to read and turning it both ways can only paper over the cracks for so long.

Ross Taylor and Tim Southee would only make the world 2nd XI. Boult maybe the 3rd XI and no one else in the top 5 world XIs.

But one area that Ross is the undisputed king in the world is backs against the wall big innings. Clarke does have some prowess in this area but since he has better openers it doesn't happen to him as often. Ross has the most character and ticker in the world.

Yeah I agree, but there's no cheat code to playing him where you can just not bother reading him and assume it's one type of delivery or another. Doesn't work like that.

I think we're getting a bit overexcited here.

When did he last score a century against Steyn and Philander? For unfortunate reasons, he missed his opportunity to really make the world stand up and take notice. It's nice that he's able to cash in here, but he's got to score tons against South Africa and Australia's attacks to be considered in that top tier.

But I will say this for Taylor - as much as Clarke is vaunted for being the best player of spin bowling, I think Taylor is a better player of truly top quality spin bowlers. Clarke makes the average ones look ****e, but Taylor can look excellent even against the best ones.

One more wicket would have been nice but i'll take that. The difference the spinners have made has been evident!!...they've added some control into the mix instead of having airheads like Gabriel and Best spray volleys all over the place for long spells!!..and what can i say about Narine? the guy was scary today..and if he's doing this now then lord knows what will happen on a 5th day track  ..Shilly!!..for all of the wickets he took he was far too expensive in recent times but a quality spinner nows how to keep it tight too and hopefully that is the path Sunil is going down!!..i really hope he's dedicated to play tests now and has a very long run now. I think he could be another ajmal in a few years..which would be fantastic for us.

The key for us now is to have some sort of lead!!..not interested in the follow on..just get at least an 80 run lead and then we should be able to add 220 to that hopefully and then it really will be game on on the last day.

On current form he would make the 2nd XI and I don't think that is a major claim to make compared to Athlai's statement that he is the best number 4 in the world. What is he 6th overall in the rankings anyway.

oh ffs kane we don't need you to be another fleming
Kane got
a)becalmed - I patented that word by the way Bahnz
b) he got his head ****ed up by the carrom ball - and started to hold his bat out playing for spin in both directions which is a recipe for disaster.

The new zealand think tank (which worries me as to who is in it) must get together tonight and hatch a plan for how to deal with Narine. And reading it off the pitch is not a strategy.

Baz must come off here as must Anderson. I don't have high hopes for Watling. And no pressure Ross but you must ton up or we could lose.

I'd really like to face a good carrom ball bowler to get a feel for the problems our batsmen face. I can't really comprehend how he disguises it because it seems like something coming from the front of the hand would be fairly blatant.

The amazing thing is this is the first first class mach Narine has played since round Febuary!!..and as we saw today when he starts to get comfortable he can just dazzle people....hopefully tomorrow we'll see his confidence grow even more.

This is a repeat post but the cunning little bugger waited 2 hours before bowling his first one so we couldn't get used to it.

Despite 156/3 seeming like a reasonable start I really do not like this situation on a turning pitch one bit. If we lose Taylor early tomorrow early then barring some successful attack from McCullum and Anderson we'll concede a sizable lead (100+) and will very likely lose. Smidgen of rain forecast for Sunday morning but other than that, this match will go the distance. Even if we draw level with WI's first innings we're still going to have to bat last and will be in a difficult position.

Makes it doubly frustrating that
a) we didn't win in Dunedin
b) we are playing on a turning track and chose to bat last

Congratulations on predicting that Narine would be a factor you picked that some time ago. I don't think Permaul is as much of a factor as Shillingford would have been. I actually think if we were more proactive we could milk Permaul nicely. The commentators are right he needs to drop a dime and call Dan V to discuss how to bowl an arm ball.

What did the indian batsmen do to destroy narine?
He's never played tests in India!!..played recent odi series there though and was hot and cold after coming back from a long break where he got married. The only place he's not done well in is Bangedash and to be fair those were some terrible roads he had to bowl on.

Kippax and Albi should give the Hamilton groundsmen they know a kick in the ass. What were they thinking making this wicket.
From what I've heard the groundsmen cant believe how it has turned out, its the first pitch prepared with the current head as #1.
