It would have been such an extremely poor drop that it would have been inexcusable.
You don't drop a guy who is a consistently safe wicketkeeper and a great #7 batsman on the basis of one dropped catch, no matter how bad it might be.

Positions even, imo.

Both sides with periods of utter crap.

Chanderpaul is all class, though.

If you want to ignore 12 months of tidy keeping and being the 3rd best basman in the side and drop him for a technically inept and one paced Australian with overrated glovework on the basis of one drop then full power to you.

I said there would be a small case for it. Not that I would do it. And while he may have been a safe keeper until now he has not been perfect. Questions, and rightfully so, would have been asked about him if he muffed that.

I also don't think how many runs he has scored matters, although I was expecting Flem to bring that up, if you are a keeper you must be solid with the gloves regardless of the number of runs you are making.

Look I don't really disagree with you Dan - I wouldn't drop him either I am just dealing in the semantics of what I said ie that there would be a small case.

you're forgetting that wicketkeepers are robots and we hold them to different standards to regular human players

For the third test in a row, our allrounder completely outbowls our third seamer. This is getting pretty serious now. Anderson's a handy bowler but we can't afford to continue carrying Wagner.

Well what a pleasant surprise!! :D ..turned off when it was 85/5 but finally our boys showed some bloody heart for a change!!..some might call the day "even" but in truth the day is all about what vibe a team has when coming off the field..and there's no question who will be the happier team today.

The first session tomorrow will be key!!..i called for 350 and it's more than possible if Sammy doesn't have his usual brain fart and decides to stick with Shiv!!..anything around 380 and NZ could be in trouble!!..they haven't faced Narine or Permual yet in this series so that's a real bonus for us..it will be interesting to see how NZ bat with a little scoreboard pressure to deal with.

And Wagner out bowled Boult. Should we drop Boult?

Stop saying drop Wagner and say who you would select in his place.

Yeah NZ will be thrilled to have picked up 6 wickets on that back breaking tarmac. Very generous of WI.

Wagner hasn't out bowled Boult over 3 consecutive tests.

It doesn't really matter who we select instead of Wagner, it just needs to happen sooner rather than later. I believe players should be given at least 3 tests to prove themselves so if we hope to find an adequate 3rd seamer within a year it needs to happen now. Identify the next cab off the rank (at the moment, Gillespie) and play them 3 tests. They really can't be worse than a 40 odd average at this point.

To be fair, I think Wagner bowled well today (from the seven or eight overs of his that I saw). Much better than some of the rubbish he produced in the first two games.

Hendrix you're being "born in this hole, die in this hole" about this. Wagner bowled well today on a pitch representative of the city it resides in and Gillespie in current nick is not better than Wagner. We want the player we bring in to contribute more than Wagner, and last week you were rooting for Bennett. Now you have Gillespie's corner. Will it be Matt Henry next week?

Wagner is doing just enough at present, but if he slips back to where he was or perfoms poorly in the Shield matches prior to the Indian series and a Bennett or a Henry continue their good form then fair enough, bring them in, but putting a line through Wagner's name after today is not a good call.

LOL when a team scores nearly 300 on the first day it's always "the pitch".... :D
It was a combination of some good batting, some poor bowling, some weird captaincy, and some downright awful fielding, The pitch is definitely poor for pace bowling but we had a chance to roll you anyway and blew it.

His first ten overs were reasonable, but his last spell was pretty awful, with a hit-me ball or two every over. He's unlucky in that he gets the ball when it's soft, so he bowled overs 67 to 80 then handed over to the others wiht the new ball. But a) he's picked as third seamer so that's his role, and b) Anderson is in the same situation and has coped far better.
